WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

My Contribution to Hip Hop Thursday

Posted over 2 years ago
I recently uncovered an old audio cassette in which I am apparently trying, in vain, to record the Fat Boys' "Wipeout" off MTV. That's right, I was using my totally awesome lavender Panasonic boombox to tape songs off the television. It sounds archaic now, but for those of you who didn't grow up in the 80s, just take my word for it when I say I was one innovative sixth grader. The tape is rather amusing, considering that in addition to taping "Wipeout" I am also recording everything else going on in the background. Highlights include my mom yelling "turn that thing down!," the dog barking, and - my personal favorite - my older brother deliberately sabotaging my efforts by singing along in his Peter Brady teenage warble as I quietly shriek "shut up!" He even makes a valiant attempt at the beatboxing bit.Although it's not as funny as my personal tape-recorded version, I found the video on YouTube. I am amazed at how much of it I can recite from memory - right down to the intro with Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini and Hector "Macho" Camacho. It also really warms my heart when two completely different types of artists - in this case the hip hoppin' Fat Boys and the surf rockin' Beach Boys - come together and find some common ground...and have a little fun. Enjoy!

  3. Lester Jonze says Rock on. This is exactly the same thing that my sister and I used to do when we were bored. Only her boombox was straight pink. We recorded off the radio, the tv, and just being straight goofy. And yes, I was the older brother. Maybe twenty or thirty tapes. I still have some. Sometimes I listen to them and I can recall the exact day, time, weather, where we were when we did it. Too cool. _And_ I just finished listening to _Moon Safari._ Weird.

  4. kellywatchthestars says Thanks for the validation, everyone. And Lester, did you by any chance also make your sister watch The Incredible Hulk, even though it scared the crap out of her, and rub dirty gym socks in her face during the commercials? Cause that would be really weird.

  5. Lester Jonze says Well, I watched it, but she was a little too young for it. On Saturday mornings though, when we would go downstairs to watch cartoons, I would make her go down first and check for monsters, killers, dwarves and other generally creepy things while I stood at the top of the stairs, halfway waiting for her to be sacrificed while preserving my safety so if need be I could alert my parents as to the impending middle earth disaster awaiting at the bottom of the stairs, so I guess it is all relative. I hadn't thought about that in twenty years.

  8. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says "I'd like to see you in New York". Funny. I was definitely there. My memory has blocked out that album even though I've listened to it hundreds of times.

  9. contrabandwidth says Not to mention that the Beach Boys never sang "Wipeout" (if you can sing it), so the song exists in some strange reference to the past, starring players that were never in the original. I love 80's rap, just the fact that you could get away with anything. I still remember my brother recording a "Men At Work" album (from the Library) with our mono tape recorder pressed up to the speaker of the record player. Don't tell the RIAA!
