Stage Fright

Posted over 5 years ago
I was sitting here at my computer. I read a post someone made about Gnarls Barkely, and decided to do some research. I don't know anything about them, except that song called Crazy that all kinds of people talk about. *shrugs*So I went and looked at some videos on You Tube. Looked up reviews on Pitchfork, thought I'd hop on to emusic and see if they have any of their tracks... they don't. But they have a feature that allows you to find artists like the one you're looking for... so I clicked it. And to my total and complete surprise on this list was Honeycut. Honeycut? No fucking way.Backstory: Somehow I ended up friends with some guy on livejournal who every month or so posts a bunch of mp3s. I've found some pretty interesting tracks from him, one of my favorites being a cover of "Impeach the President" (orginally by the Honey Drippers) by a band called Honeycut. What little I remember of the description on that post (which was a couple of years ago, so I could be mistaken) said something about it being near-impossible to find , and that it came from a French podcast or something.I listened to the crap out of this track. And then, I lost my entire digital music collection. So I searched for it everywhere. Googled every possible spelling. With quotes, without, with French articles (Les Honeycuts? La Honeycut?)I never found it through Googling. (I did eventually recover the song from a burned disc, though)I never found anything about a band with a name even closely resembling Honeycut.Which is why I almost crapped my pants when I saw this whole entire album on emusic.I'm pretty sure it's the same band. And I'm glad I found it. This is what's so cool about MOG and the internet. One thing leads to another, until you end up somewhere you never expected. When I was in high school, having this much music at my fingertips was unfathomable. I remember listening to the Voice After 8, tape recorder on pause.I discovered so many bands that way. 1. Tape the show2. Listen to tape non-stop on walkman3. Determine which bands sound promising4. Save up allowance5. Beg mom to drive me to Ann Arbor on the weekend (or to let me use the car, once I got older)6. Go to Wazoo7. Spend 4 hours browsing record bins8. Buy a whole stack of records (including several that have "interesting" covers) for $20.9. Go home10. Listen11. RepeatOK- this is why I don't post on MOG- because music leads my brain to a million different places at once. What started out as a post about why I don't post (that's why it's called "Stage Fright") has morphed into 3 different stories.I really do get stage fright sometimes, about posting on MOG. Maybe it's because I want to be one of the "cool kids". Maybe it's because I'm too busy taking in information. (So many great bands I have discovered in less than 10 days here).Who knows? But still, check out the Honeycut album. Pretty interesting.

  2. max says ah ye, honeycut, i actually worked in a record store (some of the best days of my young little life called Mod Lang Records) with Bart Davenport(of his solo stuff, honeycut, and Persephone's Bees) so he had given me the honeycut demo a while ago, such good stuff, i actually kind of forgot about it up until a few weeks ago when i bought the album, great guy, great tunes

  3. newusedrecords says It is the same Honeycut ... I saw them play at the Apple Store in SF last month and "Impeach the President" closed out their set. Apparently the singer's monitor levels kept going up and down and the sound guy would just shrug his shoulders. Anyhow, they are a cool band, and kind of reminds me of Phoenix. This year - between blogging and emusic, I have really discovered more music than I can handle. But it has been rather rewarding.
