Pimpitivity - A Mog Meet Story

When I first joined MOG, I felt an instant kinship with the southern rawker we all know as the ROCKNROLLPIMP. In terms of music preferences, we are like peas in a pod. Turns out we also have a lot in common over and above the music factor. I often found myself wondering how cool it would be if we could hang out for real, in 3D…..and curiosity finally got the better of this Kat ;O)

I’m nowhere near as seasoned a MOGmeeter as my lovely sis Lizzie, so yeah I was a bit jittery; but I haven’t had or heard of a bad MOGmeet and I decided what the hell. Life is just too damn volatile to put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Carpe Diem!

And I'm so so so glad I went with my gut. My trip to Pimp territory was worth every minute of travel time. Mostly we just chilled and listened to music – speaking of which, two new CDs were bestowed upon me and let me just say they are the BEST mixes ever! If I had hand-selected the songs myself, I couldn’t have made anything more perfect.

No Macon southern rock vacation would have been complete without a visit to Duane and Berry’s graves, so on Saturday evening we rode through Rose Hill Cemetery. I took some pictures with my cell phone but they didn't come out too well. Word to the wise – do not touch the gates, they are GREASED.

After the cemetery, we went to this fantas

tic restaurant with a gorgeous view of the lake. Fish body with a pig head, or Fish & Pig as the locals call it :) Seriously some of the best seafood I have ever had in my life, and I’m a spoiled river rat so that’s a big compliment coming from me. I can still taste the scallops...mmm

. Next stop, drive-thru liquor store! I WANT ONE. Stays open until 10:30pm and again, I must emphasize, DRIVE-THRU! If I had a place like this, I may find myself becoming an Olympian drinker like Keith...although I can now attest that his abilities in that arena would be tough to match :P

To cut a long story short, it was a superb mini-vacation down to Georgia. I must thank Keith for his fine southern hospitality. My confidence in the coolness of MOGgers has again been reinforced and I must chime in with the rest of the folks who say, "if you have a chance to hang out with a fellow MOGger, DO IT!"

Does anyone remember

Candlebox?

Happy Pills came out in 1998. Ahh the 90s. I didn't appreciate them back then. I was in high school, mom & dad were paying for everything, and nearly all of my part-time job income was used for CD-buying. I remember Candlebox was playing at the "Chili Cook-off" but I was 15 and not allowed to go to concerts yet. FYI - they let Logan go to a concert when he was 15. And they wonder why I went to so many shows in college? Making up for lost time!

"Sometimes" is still one of those songs that grabs me by the soul and shakes me. I remember blaring this CD from my bedroom while I was smoking cigarettes out the window and swiping my parent's booze. How silly all those adolescent rebellions were. Haha. I was such a punk. It's cool to listen now and look back on it all.

It's no fun to die alone

Originally done by Jerry Joseph & Glenn Esparza, "Climb To Safety" has become a staple cover song for Widespread Panic. Lucky for me, I got to see them perform it this past Sunday in Richmond. My 10th Panic show; and oddly enough, my 5th time getting "Climb To Safety" in the setlist. They must love playing it as much as I love hearing it.

When those keys chime in the beginning, the hair raises on my arms. Beyond the music, the lyrics hold special resonance for me...one of my anthems.

~You can hear it comin'
Like a train out of control
Surely leaves you wonderin'
Exactly where your ticket goes
You scream to the conductor
But he's been deaf for twenty years
Hear the other people laughin'
As he grinds through every gear

Go to grab your nerve, you find that it is missin'
Seems you've lost your faith in everyone you know
And I surely hope that you don't plan on winnin'
Better start payin' more attention to the ones that throw you clear
You are seconds from the impact, and you're movin' way too slow

Time will surely mold you
Into something you don't like
Get you runnin' like a rabbit
Stick your finger in the dike

Look around your room you find the paint is peelin'
Your reflective skin is fallin' off your bones
Well, I must admit I know just how you're feelin'
We must grab each others collar, we must rise out of the water
And you know as well as I do it's no fun to die alone

Climb to safety
After all that I've been through, you're the only one that matters
Climb to safety
You never left me in the dark here on my own
Climb to safety
Feel the water rising. Let me be your ladder
Climb to safety
I promise you'll be dry and never be alone

Love has always scared you
Like the things under your bed
Baby, we can walk on water
Like some junkies swore they did

You call me on the phone, you say that it is crucial
You stick your fingers in your ears 'til they explode
I guess the business will be goin' on as usual
We must grab each others collar, we must rise out of the water
'Cause you know as well as I do that it's no fun to die alone

Climb to safety
After all that I've been through, you're the only one that matters
Climb to safety
You never left me in the dark here on my own
Climb to safety
Feel the water rising. Let me be your ladder
Climb to safety
I promise you'll be dry and never be alone

Climb to safety, safety~

This Warren Haynes cover of "Little Wing" obviously doesn't top the Jimi version, probably doesn't outdo the SRV version either...but it's friggin awesome to me. The third stone from the sun perhaps ;o)

Listen to it. Do it.

And here's an interesting discovery I just happened upon when doing a google search...
what the? google has to be capitalized according to the little red line. Google. Heh.

http://www.bzmny.com/info.html

So yeah, when I searched my post title I found this -
Butterflies and Zebras and Moonbeams. I'm kinda jealous someone has already used this name for a business. They sell women's fashion merchandise. I want that.

PS: A special thanks to the one and only PIMP for showing me the way to the buried Warren treasure chest. Mmm.

How does everybody feel? Hey hey...I can't hear ya!

Buddy Miles and Santana - "Them Changes." This performance doesn't top the Band of Gypsys version (of course). Still, it's cool to see Buddy up front and center on the axe instead of behind the drums, and a Santana collaboration that doesn't include Chad Kroeger or Rob Thomas is a welcome change.

The circus came to town...

Imagine that about ¾ of your year is spent living in hotel rooms, or on a bus with at least four or five other people, or flying - and then pouring your heart out night after night on a stage in front of hungry audiences who have paid for your performance. It sounds like a glamorous fantasy for a lot of us, but the reality is tough. The road has broken so many souls over the years.

This Mule song seems to me like a personal account of life as a traveling musician. The depth of this track is just one example of why I love Warren Haynes – it starts getting really good around the 3 minute mark - I mean like whoa - and then again at the 4.5 minute mark. Oh how I love this song. Some may say 9 minutes is too long...but what about 9 minutes in heaven?

~A primadonna with a premonition feels like he's preachin' to the choir
A superstar filled with superstition can't pull himself out of the mire
All you ever dreamed of is finally in your reach but careful what you wish for
If you don't practice what you preach
The circus came to town, I guess it must have stayed
It's like an endless parade
All these people you can see through like ghosts, maybe you've seen too much
Nothing's real, nothing you can feel, no one you can touch
Strangers stare in silence, they think they know your mind
No place to jump off, that's the way the game's designed
Another new day dawns, another sunset fades
It's like an endless parade
Music, music and more music imploding inside your brain
The life that you have chosen did it finally drive you insane
Psychophantic tirades fill your head with ammunition
Sights set on your enemies but you keep losing your position
Reluctantly you face the day try to get your gameface on
What used to be a fantasy has now become a marathon
Every heart you ever broke, all the people you've betrayed
Another new day dawns
Another sunset fades
Yeh, the circus came to town, I guess it must have stayed
It's like an endless parade~

Art That Feeds

Although I consider myself to be a relatively tolerant and optimistic person, I have become somewhat disillusioned with the human race. It seems like all we ever hear about is greed, violence, and superficial nonsense.

Despite my recent bout of cynicism, I still believe that there are enough good people in this world to outweigh the bad.

I received this e-mail earlier, and it kinda revived my faith a little bit. It also happens to be music-related, so I decided to share it here.

For Immediate Release:
~This fall, Colorado based not-for-profit Conscious Alliance continues its mission to help feed America’s hungry communities, hosting food drives at various music events this winter/spring. Look for Conscious Alliance at the Langerado Music Festival, at the Big Cypress Indian Reservation in Florida on March 6th -9th, along STS9 and EOTO Winter Tours, and at select one-off concert events including Keller Williams and The WMD’S on February 2nd at the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver, Colorado and New Monsoon (featuring Tim Carbone from Railroad Earth and EOTO with special guest Michael Kang) on February 9th at The Fillmore in San Francisco, CA. As always, patrons can donate 10 non-perishable food items or $10.00 to receive a limited edition rock art poster.~

~Conscious Alliance started off 2008 by partnering with Jam Cruise to host a school supplies drive to benefit children living in Roatan, Honduras, one of the stops along Jam Cruise 6. Conscious Alliance, Jam Cruise, Pangea Organics, The Children’s Fund of Roatan and Zero Hero teamed up to deliver dozens of backpacks and boxes of school supplies, which were collected from passengers when the ship docked at port. Additionally, Pangea Organics donated 1000’s of bars of organic soap that were divided between a school, orphanage and clinic on the island. The Children’s Fund of Roatan shared their history to a group of 40 Jam Cruise volunteers, and children at the orphanage received an acoustic performance by Jam Cruise musicians including Jon Fishman, Jamie Janover, Jeff Coffin, Dave Watts and Dan Lebowitz.~

~For Conscious Alliance, the 2008 winter/spring season comes on the heels of a hugely successful 4th annual Turkey n’ Trimmings holiday fundraiser. As a result of a generous outpouring of donations, Conscious Alliance was able to deliver nearly 2,000 holiday dinners- three times the amount delivered in 2006! Deliveries were made to communities on Pine Ridge, Northern Cheyenne, Rosebud, Standing Rock, and Fort Peck Indian Reservations. In addition, the 4th annual Toy Drive received a huge boost this year thanks to a donation from JAKKS Pacific http://www.jakkspacific.com . The contribution landed the total number of toys donated at nearly 10,000, resulting in distribution to dozens of communities on Pine Ridge, Rosebud, Northern Cheyenne and Fort Peck Indian Reservations. Instead of wrapping paper, toys were given out in pillowcases sewn by quilting groups across the Midwest, thus eliminating excess waste.~

~Please visit www.consciousalliance.org for more information on the important work of Conscious Alliance.~

Thank you to the Mog Collective - 2nd ed.

I have caught the Ryan Adams bug, and I must express my gratitude to you all for passing on this affliction.

It took me until _Easy Tiger_...specifically "Halloweenhead". WOW. This song has gotten so many plays in the past 7 months. I still get a thrill when I hear that intro bell chime...and the fact that he announces the guitar solo makes me smile every damn time :O)

After I was satisfied that _Easy Tiger_ was completely absorbed, I moved on to the subsequent _Follow The Lights_ EP, and so on and so forth through his catalog (with the Cardinals and solo releases). I can now say without hesitation that I am a full-fledged fan of his, and I _must_ see a performance. MUST.

So I will say again, I am forever grateful to the mog-i-verse for continuing to praise this artist until my ears were finally able to hear his greatness. And to quote the man...
_"I'll probably hate it next week, but now I just love it. Woo-hoo! Turn on the faucet and let the tub overflow."_ --Blender, Aug/Sept 2001

Just zeros and ones

~They're starting to open up the sky
They're starting to reach down through
And it feels like we're living in that split-second of a car crash
And time is slowing down~

When life hands you lemons, you make lemonade (and then a trip to the liquor store)

This has been one of those weeks...and I am again reminded of how friends, family, and music get me through life's rough patches.

On Tuesday, I was in a car accident. Well, according to my summons, I _caused_ a car accident. Failure to yield right-of-way when making a left turn. No one was hurt, thankfully, so that is absolutely the most important thing. _It could have been worse_ has become my mantra this week.

On Wednesday, I picked up a rental car. I thought the insurance would pay for it, but turns out I didn’t select that option on my policy. Another bummer.

Yesterday morning, I got into the rental car to discover my portable navigation system had been stolen. There was no sign of a break-in, so I can only assume I didn’t lock the vehicle…or else this thief had mad skills. Still, _it could have been worse._ HEAVY sigh.

Obviously, there is NEVER a good time for these things to happen, but it seems to sting a little bit more in the midst of the holiday season. I had been setting money aside for gift-buying, and more importantly Coachella (waaahh). Now with insurance deductibles and court fees, I don’t know if I will be able to recover (financially) anytime in the near future.

There was a time in my life when all of this would’ve sent me down a path of reckless behavior, but I guess throughout the years I have developed some perspective. IT SUCKS - but _it could have been worse_, and life goes on. I still have more than my fair share of things to be thankful for, music and all of you being one of those things.

~And you never get away
And you never get to take the easy way
And all of this is a consequence
Brought on by our own hand
If you believe in that sort of thing~

Tortured Artist

While _Ball_ is seldom listed as a Panic fan's favorite album, it definitely has some quality tracks on it.

"Tortured Artist" is one of those songs that I can listen to and then immediately listen to again. Love everything about it.

~Feelin' ticklish
just met a new girl
she's got a tattoo
said she remembers you
Oh, one day waitin' out the rain

She embroidered the portrait of a tortured artist on your sleeve

Laugh at your own jokes,
oh wouldn't dare laugh at yourself
What a surprise
Happy, happy birthday to you
Oh you're mama's little dream come true

She painted the colors of the sunset with her fingers on my teepee

Likes cold, cold wine, cradled in the evening sky
Drinks in the deep dark reds of romance and poetry
Laughs out loud as movie stars shed their tears
In her sleep, she dreams with melancholy

And I know, I know I'm just like you
I was leaving in a way, I'm already gone
Still young, though, oozing to the radio
Oh, like poetry, a tired cowboy
Who just let his horse run free

I know, oh, I'm just like you
Not goin' anywhere.
Feel near gone,
There's a van passing fast
Moving in stereo

Barely see her face
Or maybe outline
I'm not, I can barely see

Even as she sleeps, oh, she laughs so long
Laughing loud~

One of my absolute, all-time favorite Tori songs (one of about 17, but anyway)...this is a pretty decent clip of her performing it in BOSTON on November 18, 2007. Warning - this is H-O-T.

I'm a teensy bit bummed she didn't play this when I saw her at the end of October.
But I believe in peace bitch...

FINALLY

Today, the legendary Nirvana MTV Unplugged show will be released, unedited, on DVD. I had somehow missed the news about this.

I am soooo excited you guys, I have wanted to own a copy of this performance for...well...about 14 years. At one time I had half of it recorded on VHS, but that thing is long gone.

YouTube and the occasional MTV replay have gotten me through, but the audiophile in me will not be satisfied until I have that 5.1 surround. And at lunchtime today, I will have it!

Time, time - it's so sublime

Jameson reminded me of the Meat Puppets with his post yesterday, and this song is perfectly summarizing my Monday mood. Climbing out of bed this morning was certainly an uphill battle, and the clutter on the table (or desk in my case) is getting out of hand for sure.

I admit Curt Kirkwood's voice can be grating at first, but for me it is a good type of inharmoniousness.

I won't even ask if anyone else is having a case of the Mondays, cause I'm liable to get my ass kicked for saying something like that ;o)

Tomorrow night is our annual costume gathering in these parts, marking the first year it isn't being held on the DAY of Halloween. I know, I know, it's not the same; but partying in the middle of the week has become increasingly difficult, and I'm really trying to get my drunk on ;-)

I will be going as the Queen of Hearts. It is a ridiculous-looking get-up based on the Disney version of Alice In Wonderland, one that _definitely_ requires inebriation (but really all of them do...)

In my search for video clips today, I stumbled upon this - a trippy montage of scenes set to Tool's "Schism."

The Gaping Pumpkin Experience

Happy Halloween MOGland!

Last night was pumpkin carving time, and I was dead set on making another music-themed design this year. After much deliberation, I finally settled on this one. Please keep in mind that I have no knack whatsoever for arts and crafts.

And here's the pumpkin army...

I had forgotten how much patience it takes to carve a pumpkin - sheesh! At least we only do it once a year...
Have a safe & fun Halloween everyone!

Portugal. The Man - Church Mouth

I got this CD in the mail today, and I'm rather enjoying it. In the same family with The White Stripes and The Black Keys but not an identical twin to either of 'em. The second track of the album, "Sugar Cinnamon", is the one that's stayed in my head. I couldn't resist the keys, the drum lines, or the layered vocals.

Granted, I've only listened to the album twice through so my opinion is sure to change. But really, all of the songs are pretty engaging, despite being lyrically incoherent at times. The music is ripe with blues-infused riffage, which is always a step in the right direction. It's definitely done well here, very Sabbath & Zeppelin-esque at times but not too derivative. These guys have promise. I'm going to see them (in Harrisonburg believe it or not) on October 3, so I'll have to make the real judgment call then.

According to the _Star Bulletin_ in Honolulu, HI, the NIN concert on September 18 in Hawaii will be "the last show of the current incarnation of the band." Straight from the Reznor's mouth. "At this point, I want to switch things around a bit. Nine Inch Nails as a rock band configuration, we've done it and we've done it again. I see other ways I can present the material in concert, more challenging, something new. I don't want it to go stale."

NIN Fan Remixes Available

The results of the Nine Inch Nails fan remix contest can be found here. The winning track is a version of "My Violent Heart" by DJ Scarab, which I'm currently streaming. I really like what he or she has done with the vocals and the ending, some very interesting harmonies. DJ Scarab is no slouch - two of his or her mixes were chosen.

You can either stream the 21 track album or download it via Torrent. Once the demand dies down, Zip file downloads will be available as well.

What's this? Another NIN post? Yup :)

Good news for anyone like me who's been craving some decent video/sound of the Year Zero tour.
Improvisczario - New Bernie Worrell album

Somehow, this is the first I'm hearing of this. An improv album with Bernie Worrell, Warren Haynes, and Mike Gordon?? I just listened to the tracks over on the Improvisczario MySpace site This is some of the best stuff I've heard in awhile. Really funky shit. Definitely picking this up when it hits the shelves on September 11.

Local Flavor - Vol. 1

For one reason or another, I've fallen into the habit of mainly pursuing established artists for my concert fixes. I don't know when this occurred, but I am resolving to get out there and see more smalltown, local bands. Granted, Harrisonburg Virginia doesn't have the most burgeoning music scene (wish I coulda been around when Crash was blowing up the spot). Still, some pretty decent musicians hail from the state for lovers - our own David Lowery, Keller Williams, Dave Grohl, Mike Watt, Missy Elliot, Patsy Cline, Ella Fitzgerald, Bruce Hornsby, and of course, Dave Matthews.

Friday night, I had the itch for some live music (imagine that). I was already planning to meet some friends in Richmond, so I scoured Jambase to find out who was playing around town. I came across a band called Crucial Elements performing at the Capital Ale House. A reggae band and delicious beer. Can't beat that. When we got to the music hall, I was surprised to see a twenty-something white guy singing like a Marley. These guys are not your typical Rastas, although I'm sure they're serious practitioners of at least the dreadlock & ganja parts of the movement. Crucial Elements' sound is reminiscent of Sublime and Matisyahu. Not bad at all. Looks like they're actually coming to Harrisonburg in a few weeks, so I might have to go check them out again...this time with a clearer head (in other words, less beer :)

Check them on MySpace for song samples and tour dates.

The Allman Brothers Band - Live 8.14.07 - Bristow, VA

The Allman Brothers Band
Nissan Pavilion – Bristow, VA
August 14, 2007 – 6:30 PM
Supporting Act – Bob Weir & Ratdog

Last night was absolutely mind-blowing, and the current state of my brain _definitely_ confirms that. I still have a smile on my face (and grass stains on my feet) even though I’m at work and running on few hours of sleep + lots of coffee. The performance (and the whole experience) exceeded all of my expectations. The weather was picture perfect, the lawn was open for business, and the crowd was just the right size. We met quite a few colorful characters – one guy in the beer line who was our own personal stand-up comedian (Will – or should I say Will I? hehe - can back me up on that one ;-)

The band took the stage at 9:00pm, and the music didn’t stop for two glorious hours.

SETLIST:
Hot ‘Lanta, Statesboro Blues, Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More, Midnight Rider, Maydell, Soulshine (with Ron Holloway on sax), Wasted Words, Good Morning Little Schoolgirl (with Jeff Chimenti on keys), Leave My Blues At Home, Trouble No More, Same Thing > Bass > Drums >Same Thing (with Ron Holloway on sax)
Encore: Melissa, Jessica

Sunday night, the show started off at a simmer. Last night, they came out scalding with “Hot ‘Lanta” into the unshakable crowd-pleaser, “Statesboro Blues”. They kept the hits coming (hits for days ya’ll) with “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More” and another audience favorite, “Midnight Rider”. Then it was time for some Warren Haynes originals. “Maydell” sure put the squeeze on me – the guitar work and Warren’s vocals had me crying out to my deity. I didn’t think it could get better, but that opening riff of “Soulshine” nearly brought me to my knees. One of the best songs ever written in my humble opinion, and Ron Holloway on sax sends it soaring. Our other guest of the evening, Ratdog’s keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, laid down some vicious piano on “Schoolgirl” while Gregg took a break. There was no relenting once Gregg came back out. Willie Dixon’s “Same Thing” was perhaps the pinnacle of the evening for me, if I had to choose. Also, I am in love with the bass and drums combo they have going on now. As I said on Monday, it’s great to see Oteil getting more of the limelight. The night ended with the two beautiful belles of the ball, “Melissa” and “Jessica”, leaving me with an entirely different setlist than Sunday night. I wish I had more hands so I could give this show TEN thumbs up!

The Allman Brothers Band - Live 8.12.07 - Virginia Beach, VA

The Allman Brothers Band

August 12, 2007 – 5:30 PM
Supporting Acts – JJ Grey & Mofro, Drive-By Truckers

Allman Brothers concerts bring a joy to my life that can not be replicated. Those seven gentlemen are some of the finest musicians you will ever witness. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a summer evening – ahhh, my spirit has been cleansed. The opening bands, JJ Grey & Mofro and Drive-By Truckers, were excellent appetizers. I was feeling loose as a goose by the time the Brothers took the stage, despite the afternoon’s tailgating activities getting terminated early by the bike cops. Around 8:15, Warren Haynes’ guitar tech and doppelganger Brian Farmer appeared on stage, eliciting the usual crowd misfire. I can’t really blame folks for being confused though; as Will pointed out, they do look remarkably similar.

At about 8:30, the lights went down, and this time the applause and hollering was justified. I managed to keep up with the setlist for the most part, even in my tipsy condition (haven’t found any Internet confirmation yet, so I apologize if I missed anything)

SETLIST
Don’t Want You No More, It’s Not My Cross To Bear, Can’t Lose What You Never Had, Done Somebody Wrong, Hoochie Coochie Man, Come & Go Blues, High Cost of Low Living, song about a .44 (not familiar with this one), Southbound w/ Bruce Katz & the horn players from Mofro, Sky Is Crying also w/ Bruce Katz, End of the Line, Manic Depression, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed >Bass & Drums>Drums, No One To Run With
Encore: One Way Out (w/ Patterson Hood from DBT)

There were moments of perfection – sweltering slide riffs, bass & drums locked in unison, with Gregg’s ripened vocals and that B3 wrapping around my soul. The bluesy jam intro to “Hoochie Coochie Man” sent me into another realm. I wasn’t familiar with the .44 song after “High Cost,” but it was sooo good, one of the hardest & heaviest of the night. The “Southbound” with the horn section was tremendous. Bruce Katz, the pianist from Gregg’s band sat in on “Southbound” and “Sky Is Crying.” WHEW – man is a helluva player. JJ Grey played harmonica at some point but I can’t recall which song. Then there was Oteil. After seeing him with the Aquarium Rescue Unit this spring, I commented that his talents weren’t being fully utilized by the Brothers. I stand corrected. He sang lead on “Manic Depression” and I know Jimi was smiling down. “Elizabeth Reed” culminated with a bass solo that raised the hair on my arms. Then it was time for the drums, but Oteil wasn’t finished. Before too long, he was back behind Butch’s drum kit giving us a total of four percussionists hammering away. I was ready for the long haul, so I was pretty surprised when the drum solo ended after only 8 minutes. There was a video montage of Duane, Woody, and Berry to compliment “No One To Run With,” and “One Way Out” ended the evening with a bang.

Just like falling in love, words can not do justice to this feeling of pure bliss. Beyond the music, I had my 15 year old brother with me (his first ABB show), my dad (first ABB show since the 70s), and some of my closest friends, so yeah, I was on cloud nine _thousand_. The best part – I get to do it again tomorrow night!!!

~Widespread Panic covering Robert Johnson's "Stop Breakin' Down Blues" (featuring Luther Dickinson from North Mississippi Allstars)~

My concert budget is getting bombed out and depleted! Last Monday, I had to shell out $200+ for the Kia (spark plugs, diagnostics, and a little extra for that thing they broke off inside of me at the dealership). Then Sunday, I go to charge my cell phone and realize the whole damn charging port has ripped out of the bottom. So I had to order new equipment yesterday. I sprung for the LG VX8550. I figured while I was in for a 2 year contract, I might as well get a phone I would enjoy for that long. The next stop on my road to bankruptcy occurred this morning. I get in the car and there's this awful tinging-buzz & rattling noise coming from my passenger side. I did a little research and asked some people here at the office - the general consensus is that the sound's my brake wear indicator letting me know I'm about to ruin my rotors if I don't replace the brake pads.

Hooo hooo it'll make you lose your mind!

North Mississippi Allstars - FloydFest 6 - 7.28.07

I can't even begin to describe how fantastic the guys were on Saturday night. Then again, it's impossible for me to be objective at this point. Trust me despite my bias - you absolutely, positively _MUST_ go see the Allstars if you get the opportunity. Straight up blues, boogie, funk, rock, country - you name it, these fellas can lay it down. Kurt Clayton has started sitting in on keys for some shows, and I had the pleasure of seeing him for the first time at FloydFest. The element he adds is incredible, never distracting, like he was meant to play with 'em. I also got to see Chris break in his new Lakland and it was mmm mmm good. The MC pulled me aside and told me Big Chew was the best bassist he'd ever seen in his life, and he certainly got no arguments from me ;o) The brothers Dickinson were on fire as usual. Luther is not wasting any time ascending the ranks to guitar god status, and Cody is just plain killer on the drums. They were only scheduled to play til 12:15, and it was about 12:45 when they started the encore. The crowd was going nuts - I'd be curious to know how many people came to FloydFest to see the NMAs, cause they were packed in like sardines as far as the eye could see. During the "All Night Long" encore, a young man, he couldn't have been older than 13 or 14, came out and just SHREDDED it. I was floored when I looked up and realized it was a kid. Apparently, he is/was a student at Dave Matthews' guitar school, but skills like that can not be taught, he played like an old pro. I was jealous of his cool factor - this kid is going places. Eventually I'll get back to you with his name....

Anyway, if I didn't say it enough by now, the show was amazing. I'm still quite exhausted, though. We got lost for about an hour and a half leaving the festival grounds, I was in a rental car because the Kia was broken, and I've spent about 15 hours on the road in the past two days. But was it worth it? Hell yeah!

PS: I wasn't kidding when I said go see these guys (click here for tour dates ) - they've got gigs lined up all over the country through the rest of the year - a few supporting the Allman Brothers and the Black Crowes, and then a 6 week tour with Mavis Staples, Charlie Musselwhite, and Joe Krown. I know The Grammys are a sham these days, but still, they didn't get nominated for three for nothing.

King Wilkie - Live 7.21.07 - Charlottesville, VA

King Wilkie w/ Sarah White opening
Satellite Ballroom – Charlottesville, VA
July 21, 2007, 10:00 PM

You know you’ve got a concert addiction when you’re going to see people you’ve never even heard of. In my experience, some of the coolest musical discoveries are made in those spur of the moment occasions. So, in that spirit, last night I decided to go check out King Wilkie at the Satellite Ballroom. Of course, I did some cursory research and found out they're a bluegrassy-americana style band. It felt like a good night for that, so I figured it was worth a shot. I had an ulterior motive as well – I’ve really wanted to scope the venue that has replaced my beloved Starr Hill. I’ll cut to the chase - this place doesn’t hold a candle :( The acoustics were awful, the vibe was sterile and impersonal, and the parking is no longer free (unless you have a Charlottesville native with you, which fortunately I did). I don’t like to say _only_ negative things - the seating options were better, and it definitely wasn’t as hot. Oh and there were some trippy projected images on the wall behind the bar. Yeah, I’m reaching :/

We got there right as Sarah White took the stage. There was no back-up band – just her and her guitar, which I respect the hell out of. Her voice reminded me of Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams, Sarah McLachlan....classic yet ragged. The flaws are what make it. Her songs are soothing, combining elements of country, folk, and rock. If you’re into a raw, simple sound and lyrics that tell a story, you’ll probably like this chick. You can check out a few songs on her Myspace page.

About 15 minutes after Sarah’s set finished, the gentlemen of King Wilkie emerged - six young fellas clad in button-down shirts and ties, easy on the eyes to say the least. They assumed their positions next to their respective instruments – an upright bass, 2 guitars, a banjo, a fiddle, and a mandolin. The first song was a real knee-slapper, conjuring up images of hoedowns and dosey-do. They lost their momentum after that first one, though. The next few songs were much softer, sweeter, and _sloooowwwer_. The fiddle and the vocal harmonies were gorgeous, and I was so relaxed I felt like I’d taken a Unisom. If I had been seated, I definitely would've been snoring. As I fought back the yawns, I told my friend Hillary how much more enjoyable this music would be if it were an afternoon show, or if I was lying in a hammock at the beach. I really enjoyed their sound, kinda similar to Nickel Creek and Union Station, with a 3-man vocal harmony reminiscent of Crosby, Stills, and Nash. Their timing and dynamic changes were impeccable, their songs were balanced and well-written - my only complaint was the choice of setlist. When it’s past midnight, you might wanna play something that keeps your audience awake. I will definitely be buying a CD though – if insomnia ever hits, I’ve got just the cure!

Here's a clip of King Wilkie back in April -

This song has been my Friday anthem for years and years. Imagine my joy when I found video of the acoustic version! Oh how I love YouTube, and oh how I wish Shannon was still with us today.

_♪My mind is a mind that I have come to know
And my eyes can't conceive a world that can not grow
Fridays are always fresh days♪_

Hope everyone has a fresh day and a wonderful weekend ;p

Bob Weir & Ratdog - Live 7.14.07 - Charlottesville, VA

Bob Weir & Ratdog w/ Keller Williams
Charlottesville Pavilion – Charlottesville, VA
July 14, 2007, 6:00 PM

Things were becoming warm, fuzzy, and hazy by the time Bob & the band emerged :O) There was a huge turnout for this show – Deadheads everywhere. This was my first time seeing Ratdog, so I had no clue what to expect. Well, turns out I should have expected GREATNESS. Bob Weir is THE MAN, and the guys in the band are all amazing. I heard from someone in the crowd that Steve Kimock was filling in for the guitarist, and no offense to Mark, but that made me quite happy. Steve’s always on point and I love any opportunity to see him in action. Also, another tidbit I heard that last night was
Bob Weir’s 750th show!

The internet confirmed this fact and all I can say is holy freaking crap, that’s ridiculous.

They didn’t waste any time, and started us off with a blazing jam that slowly escalated into “The Music Never Stopped”, which got everyone up and dancing. Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried” and Dylan’s “Senor” were the cover tunes for the first set, along with a few other songs I didn’t recognize. Then the set closed with one of the night’s highlights, the towering “Eyes of the World”. I think it was Lizzie who recently mentioned the moment where you lose yourself in the music, and “Eyes of the World” took me to that place. A helluva way to end the first set.

I didn’t think the guys would be able to surpass that “Eyes”, and for the first few songs of the second set, they didn’t. Then, I heard that funky opening riff of “Estimated Prophet” and Weir’s voice sounded like it hadn’t aged a bit as he sang out ♪California!♪ They didn’t relent, calling up the thunder in “The Other One” - followed by a deep version of The Beatle’s “Dear Prudence”, and closing out the second set with the BEST “One More Saturday Night” I have ever seen. The energy on that song made me feel like I might explode. The crowd hooted and hollered as the stage went black. The encore came quickly, and I can’t begin to explain how happy I was. “Ripple” - one of my most beloved Dead songs. I nearly cried because I wished it was Jerry up on stage, but somehow Bob channeled him. I could not have walked away more impressed. I am now a full-blown Bob Weir & Ratdog fan. Worth every penny.

Keller Williams - Live 7.14.07 - Charlottesville, VA

Keller Williams w/ Bob Weir & Ratdog
Charlottesville Pavilion – Charlottesville, VA
July 14, 2007, 6:00 PM

Saturday shows are by far my favorites. When work’s not looming on the horizon, I can finally breathe easy and let my freak flag fly! Ahhh…the blissful concert afterglow. For my money, there’s no better way to undo life’s stresses.

So, I got to Charlottesville early to meet up with Amanda for some grub. After we ate, we wandered towards the venue, and as if the delicious food wasn’t enough to set the day off right, I’ll be damned if we didn’t get to hear Keller’s Soundcheck!!! First off was a pretty killer rendition of Dave Mathew’s “Jimi Thing”. A sizeable crowd started to form, and Keller seemed to become aware of the audience. He made a slight chord shift, and sang in one of his silliest of voices, ♪I would swallow my pride, I would choke on the rinds…♪ Haha. Eve 6’s “Inside Out”. “Play This” and a couple other warm-up jams followed, then some fine piano work on “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down”. Just when I thought the soundcheck was over, Bob Weir came out and the two played “Brown-Eyed Women”, a favorite of mine from the Grateful Dead collection ♪Brown-eyed women and red grenadine, the bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean♪ Yup, Robert Hunter wrote some great party lyrics. After soundcheck, we still had plenty of time to kill before the show, so we went and hade seriously the BEST gelato I have ever had in my life. I wish I had an endless supply of that stuff.

Fast forward to 6 pm. We have our spot staked out on the lawn, the weather is fantastic, $5 beers in hand. This was my 5th time seeing Keller, and he’s still at the top of his game. I am more in love every time. The setlist had some Keller classics, “Fuel for the Road”, “People Watchin’”, “Bob Rules”, “Love Handles”; as well as some fun cover songs, “Mama Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys”, “Wanted Dead or Alive”, “Rapper’s Delight”, and the “Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” that we’d heard him rehearse earlier. Bob came out again to close out Keller’s set, and I got to hear “Brown-Eyed Women” again. Score!

Well folks, I have been dealt the crushing blow I've only read about until now. My favorite venue, Starr Hill Music Hall, is closing its doors tomorrow night. I felt like I could cry when I read the news. Sure, the floor felt like it could collapse under the weight of 400 dancing hippies - sure, it got hotter than hades in there - but it was _my_ spot. The sound quality was always superior, and the intimacy between the crowd and performers was unrivaled. Looks like they're moving all of their shows to a new location, the Satellite Ballroom. And I don't particularly like the group that's performing the farewell show tomorrow night, so I guess this is goodbye...

To add insult to injury - I can't find YouTube footage of a single show I've attended there! At least there's audio - here's some Dark Star Orchestra, caught them many times at good 'ole Starr Hill :{

Umphrey’s McGee – Live – 6/27/07

The D.U.M.B Tour
Umphrey’s McGee co-headlining with The Disco Biscuits
Charlottesville Pavilion - Charlottesville, VA
June 27, 2007, 6:50PM

Whenever there is a jamband-y show at the Charlottesville Pavilion, the pedestrian mall leading up to the venue gets taken over by swarms of hippies. This amuses me to no end. You can see the look of terror on locals’ faces as they’re dining at the outdoor cafés and are suddenly engulfed in a sea of tie-dye, dreadlocks, and patchouli. It’s one of the few times and places where you witness the awkward, and hilarious, intermingling of the hippies and the squares.

Sadly, I didn’t have time to take all that in like I usually do. I was running late, and my bladder was about to explode. I rushed through the hippie promenade and got to the Pavilion just in time to hear Umphrey’s take the stage. I still hadta pee, and let me tell you, the bathrooms are _such_ an upgrade from the porta-potties that used to be there. Also, LADIES, some really generous female fans of Umphrey’s McGee (a group called 2nd Self) came up with just about the greatest idea I’ve ever seen. They placed baskets of feminine products, hand lotion, condoms, mints, etc. next to all the sinks. How extremely sweet _and_ much appreciated!

I grabbed my first beer and weaved through the crowd. I counted at least 4 Tool shirts on my way to the front, confirming my theory that Umphrey’s is the Tool fans jamband. I made it to the stage at the exact moment they started into the second song of the evening, a long-time favorite of mine, “Jimmy Stewart.”

SETLIST:
Plunger > "Jimmy Stewart" > Plunger > The Fuzz > Partyin' Peeps, Wizard Burial Ground, Thin Air, Great American > Got Your Milk (Right Here), All In Time, YYZ

The crowd was visibly sluggish from the muggy heat, but “Partyin’ Peeps” got everyone moving and getting their groove on. _♪ The beat is kickin’ in, we’ve got a second wind ♪_ Brendan Bayliss’ voice has a quality that breaks into my brain and captures me, very similar to the effect of Incubus’ Brandon Boyd. This is not to diminish the impact of the other band members, since 4 out of the 6 of them are equally active and talented with the vocals. The tightness of the ensemble is impressive; everything they do is gleaming. If they were ever out of step, I didn’t notice it. They improvise and jam, but they serve up their noodles al denté. In one song, they are playing synchronized runs that conjure images of the Allman Brothers, in the next song, they sound like Iron Maiden. Their newest, “Wizard Burial Ground,” was heavy and totally bad ass. Then Joel Cummins brings this jazzy piano solo, paving the way for the percussionists to infuse yet another genre into the mix – bongos + steel drum = Caribbean. Towards the end of their set, Bayliss reenacted Chappelle’s “Tyrone Shuffle”, which seemed to go unnoticed by everyone but me. Brendan, if you read this, I saw that and I cheered! They closed out with a stellar cover of Rush’s “YYZ” (teasing “Spirit of Radio” at the end) which left me even hungrier for more. They’re playing in Norfolk, VA tonight…damn this day job! As the roadies set up for the Disco Biscuits, I found myself wishing that it wasn’t a co-bill. Bisco is alright, but they just don’t do it for me like Umphrey’s McGee.

I've been teased for listening to Steely Dan, but that don't confront me none. If it's considered Muzak, then I'll ride the elevator all day long. Say what you want - they were ahead of their time, talkin' about bling in 1973.

So yay, I've definitely got a ticket to see Umphrey's McGee & The Disco Biscuits tomorrow night. It's a treat that I'll be seeing them together - I've heard from folks who were on the Jam Cruise that the Umphrey's McBisco collaboration is blazing.

In honor, here's some Nemo to help me get my Umphreak on...

Drive-By Truckers - Live - 6/22/07

Drive-By Truckers
Brown’s Island in Richmond, VA
June 22, 2007; 6:00 PM
Opening Act: Patty Hurst Shifter

The Drive-By Truckers kick ass. This was my first time seeing them, but it will _definitely_ not be the last (if I can help it). Why did it take me so long? Well, stupidly, I steered clear of these guys (and gal) for awhile. I wrongfully assumed I wouldn’t get into them because of the twang and storytelling, figured it was too much country for my liking. Then a couple years back, a friend played _Southern Rock Opera_ for me. I did a complete 180. I had to burn a copy immediately.

To get me in the mood, I jammed out to _The Dirty South_ on my drive down the mountain to Richmond. The weather was lovely on Friday night, warm with a nice breeze. We missed most of the opening band, Patty Hurst Shifter, while in line for wristbands and beer. Luckily, the crowd was small enough that we managed to stake a spot up front, center stage. At about 8:00 pm, the Truckers came out, passing a fifth of Jack Daniels while they tuned their instruments. Patterson’s big ‘ole grin is instantly engaging and infectious. “I love you too, fucker,” he replies to a cheering fan as they launch into the first song.

SETLIST:
Bulldozers and Dirt
Uncle Frank
After The Scene Dies (NEW - Patterson)
A Ghost To Most (NEW - Cooley)
The Living Bubba
Two Daughters and a Beautiful Wife (NEW - Patterson)
Marry Me
Self Destructive Zones
Tales Facing Up
18 Wheels Of Love
Zip City
The Story Of The Road Cases
Road Cases
Shut Up And Get On The Plane
Let There Be Rock
Angels And Fuesalage
Buttholeville->State Trooper->Buttholeville

The highlight of the night for me was the second half of the set - especially “18 Wheels of Love”, a song that’s rarely played. Patterson told a hilarious story of the song’s history – how his mother went to work at a trucking company, met Chester the truck driver, and this song was Patterson’s wedding gift to them. “They were married at Dollywood - I can not make this shit up,” he said. He then told the crowd that Chester has been quite sick as of late, and he was dedicating the night’s performance to him and a speedy recovery. Keep him in your prayers. “Road Cases” was another great one, introduced with a story about the rise and fall of the Atlanta Rhythm Section. “Let There Be Rock” had the whole crowd screaming along with fists raised in the air, “Bon Scott singin’ let there be rock!!!”

It was also cool to hear some of the new material. Patterson revealed that they had just started working on the album a few weeks ago, and they’d be back in December when it was finished. Scott Baxendale, custom guitar extraordinaire, joined the stage for the encore of “Buttholeville” into “State Trooper”.

I was sad to see them go after just one set, but I have no right to complain when it's free! Plus I was pretty hungry and ready to bring it on in to Omeletteville - CrashPryor's mention of the Third Street Diner sounded like the perfect after-show stop.

The place has had some major renovations. I don't remember a full-size bar from the last time I went. That, on top of a great show, made my night. A definite gold star occasion.

Hurry up tomorrow!

Well, I have just finalized my plans to head to Richmond tomorrow night for a free Drive-By Truckers show. Every summer, some of the best music comes to Brown's Island on the banks of the James River. The best part - all of the Friday Cheers shows are free. As Ronald McDonald says, I'm lovin' it.

I've never seen the DBT; and while I'm sure Jason's presence will be missed, I hear Johnny Neff is great on his pedal steel. Now if I can just make it through the day tomorrow...I'm giddy with anticipation!

Salt In The Wound

For me, the biggest downside to being a music lover (addict, junkie, etc. ) is a missed concert. As if the knowledge that Tom Morello joined Tool at Bonnaroo wasn't bad enough, I just get this email...

"This show is flat out why we do MuleTracks. The late-night/early-morning show from Bonnaroo is now available for download.

'Streamline Woman' and 'Brand New Angel' are absolutely thunderous and 'Sweetleaf' and 'War Pigs' leading into 'Soulshine' for a second encore? How do you top that?
Well, you can try the rest of the set. Michael Franti on 'Play With Fire', Bob Weir on 'Sugaree' and 'Loser', Jorma Kaukonen, Jack Casady & Barry Mitterhoff on 'Come Back Baby' and 'Death Don't Have No Mercy', Luther Dickinson on "32/20 Blues' &'That's What Love Will Make You Do'...Comedian Lewis Black even showed up for a joke that turned violent.

If all that isn't enough to make you download this show, how about John Paul Jones playing bass on 'Moby Dick' and 'Livin' Lovin' Maid', and then playing keys on 'Since I've Been Loving You' and 'No Quarter'? Like we've said over and over again since Sunday and are still saying: Wow!"

Waaaaaahhhhhh! At least I can download it...

This one's for you, Queen of the Mixtapes

Last week, I ripped into an envelope from our very own Lizziegreeneyes to find 17 tracks of glorious tunage. One of life’s greatest treasures is a mixtape (she’d have a fit if I called it a CD). Her timing was wonderful – the mix was the perfect companion for my moving/packing activities. The best part – more than half of the songs were brand-spanking new to my ears :)

Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse (13th Life Mix) / Propaganda
How did I not know Propaganda before now? This song is a great way to set off a mix.

I was baited by the first line, “Why does it hurt when my heart misses a beat?,” and completely hooked by about 45 seconds in. The chorus “sell him your soul, never look back” is frighteningly compelling. And then there’s that electronic drum break! Killer.

The Kill / 30 Seconds To Mars
Back in my teen years, I had the BIGGEST crush on Jordan Catalano (Jared Leto’s character in My So-Called Life). When I heard that he and his brother were forming a band, I was intrigued. The first album didn’t really grab my attention, so I kinda forgot to check back up on them. Then I started hearing them on Sirius. I’ll admit, I normally glaze over a lot of the new rock, but there’s something so gripping about Jared’s vocals. My little brother was listening to this CD with me this weekend, and I noticed that it’s now his myspace song. He must approve as well.

Orestes / A Perfect Circle
There’s no mistaking Maynard’s voice. The first time I heard A Perfect Circle on the radio, I didn’t know who the hell they were but I _knew_ that was the frontman from Tool. I also knew I really really liked their sound. I have devoured everything they’ve put out since Mer de Noms. “Orestes” is beautiful and haunting. Josh Freese’s constant yet subtle drum lines, Howerdel’s simple yet spine-tingling guitar work, and of course Maynard’s flawless delivery. Another excellent choice by Ms. Greeeneyes.

What Jail Is Like / The Afghan Whigs
While I’ve admitted Greg Dulli has quite the vocal presence, for some reason, I’ve resisted The Afghan Whigs. Until now that is. This song rules. I love the contrast between the distorted guitar and the piano. And the lyrics, discussing shared needles, infatuation, loneliness. My favorite is “you think I’m scared of girls, well maybe, but I’m not afraid of you.”

Gin / Amy Correia
Lizzie, girl, how did you know that gin was my first and foremost favorite alcohol? Amy is another artist who I’ve managed to miss out on thus far. It’s kinda sad how very few females I listen to. “Gin” is amazing musically and lyrically (and alcoholically heh). This song is so smooth you don’t even need tonic water ;o) Amy’s voice has that sweet yet raspy quality that I like in my women. I will definitely be adding more of her stuff to my playlist.

Rolling / Soul Coughing
There are some songs that just don’t sound good until you hear them in a car. On my first listen of the mix, I thought this song was kinda repetitive and it didn’t really stand out. Then I heard it while I was driving, and before I knew it, I had the volume cranked way up.

Shadows / Terence Trent D’Arby
This one blew me away. I’m sure this man has no problem whatsoever getting laid. That voice…mmm mmm. The blend of the orchestral sounds, the beat, and that hot voice makes this song classify as a masterpiece in my book. And the lyric “Yes my love is strong, I will roll it for you if you don't smoke it” has to be one of the best ever. Yet another A+ pick by Lizzie.

Believe The Lie / Umphrey’s McGee
It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for all things jam band. I’ve only managed to see Umphrey’s McGee once, but I’m hoping to make that twice here in a week or so. Even if you’re not a big fan of the jam, this song is fast-paced and rockin’ enough to grab your interest. These guys are very talented, and this song showcases their skills spectacularly. There are so many layers; it just keeps getting better the more you listen to it.

Reverend Girl / The Verve Pipe
I used to listen to The Verve Pipe like crazy. Then “The Freshmen” got so overplayed I basically retired the Villians album and have never looked back. Hearing this song made me wanna dig that album up and give it another spin. Brian has got a great voice – perfect for that 90s alternative sound. And the lyric “3 am cellophane” means so much more to me now than it did back when this album came out :$

Quiet As A Mouse / Margot & The Nuclear So And So’s
Never heard of this group before this mix. I haven’t listened to anything else by them, but this song was a good enough introduction to make me curious. The guitar is hard, the voice is smooth, and the jazzy trumpet is a cherry on the top.

Cradle And All / Ani DiFranco
Another great female vocalist that I’ve been away from for too long. This song is unforgettable – the second I heard the opening guitar riff, a wave of emotion came flooding back. Ani’s music was there for me through some rough times, especially the Not A Pretty Girl album. For awhile, I was just filled with too many memories when I listened to her. It’s been long enough, though. Ani needs to come back into frequent rotation. There just aren’t words to describe how powerful and amazing this song is.

Deep Enough / Live
This song starts off quietly, and then just comes at you like a freight train. Live is one of those bands that I’ve never sought out too much, but I’m always pleasantly surprised when I hear them. And let’s face it, “Lightning Crashes” was one of the best songs of the 90s. I have to admit, I haven’t listened to any of these new albums, but this song is enough to pique my interest.

Violaine / Cocteau Twins
I feel like I’m floating from the first note. It’s absolutely hypnotizing. Elisabeth’s voice is beautiful and mesmerizing. Heaven or Las Vegas is the only CT album that I have, but if this song is any indication of Milk & Kisses, I need to grab that one as well.

Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It / Phish
I didn’t even get to see Phish in their prime, but I’ve listened to enough live recordings to say I was there in spirit. For a few of my college years, this band was what I was listening to at least 75% of the time. Leave it to Lizzie to pull out a rare cut that I haven’t heard in eons. It starts and ends with Page teasing that great Argent song, “Hold Your Head Up.” In the middle you’ve got the Fresh Prince’s hit, “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It,” and I hear that voice and can instantly picture Fishman and his mu-mu haha. Phish was one of the most entertaining bands in history – the proof’s in the pudding.

Theme De Yoyo / Cinematic Orchestra
When a song starts off with some hot keys that are up there with the likes of Ray Charles, you know it’s gonna kick your ass. And then when the bassline kicks in with those relentlessly funky sax & horn attacks, you know you’re a goner. This song is short (2:23), but it packs a hell of a punch. Probably my favorite discovery of the whole disc.

Pavement Tune / The Frames
I want my life to make more sense to me. A simple lyric, but it means so much. I have been meaning to check out more by The Frames, but I just needed a kick in the rear like this song. I wish I could say more, but the Chardonnay and music is marinating and rendering me speechless. We’re almost through here folks, just one more song…

Teenage Hustling / Tori Amos
Madame Greeneyes saves the best for last on her mixes. Tori is a goddess, and this song off of her newest album just rocks my world. It’s guitar-laden and hardcore, and the lyrics + delivery = pure bliss. Talk about a girl crush, Tori is my ultimate girl crush. She’s a M-I-L-F don’t you forget.

Lizzie – this CD rules and I can’t thank you enough!

Disclaimer: if you're not a fan of toilet talk, just go ahead and ignore this post.

I go to the office bathroom for my regularly scheduled, coffee-induced "break." I finish my bidness, get up, and the toilet does not flush. It's not that it's clogged - there's no water in the tank at all. I turn on the bathroom faucet, also no water. Why couldn't the water get cut off on someone else, or at least at a time when my embarrassment could be minimized? Heh. Gotta love life's comical amusements.

Coffee is my BFF

Whew. It's tired in here. This weekend I went through the major ordeal of moving. In addition to sleep deprivation and exhaustion, there is the unfortunate byproduct of being without Internet at home. I am actually _happy_ to be at the office - for one, I can check in on Mogland (I'll never catch up though) and secondly, at least I have 9 hours that I don't have to wade through boxes.

I am now slurping my -third- fourth cup of coffee, and the caffeine is _finally_ starting to kick in. I could marry this beverage right now. Apparently Mr. Dylan had a fondness for it as well...

This is one of my favorite Dylan songs - one of many. The violin and kinda western feel of the instrumentation, the psychic references in the lyrics (_your sister sees the future like your momma and yourself_), and the overall dark vibe it sends out.

What other coffee songs are out there?

Tonight. Richmond Coliseum. TOOL!

As Ian was saying, there hasn’t been variety in regards to setlists. However, on Tuesday night, Tool played “Flood” in South Carolina. Is it a fluke that Ian and I spoke that same night about how it would never happen? Is it a coincidence that I listened to “Flood” three times that day? I’d really like to think it was partly because of my candyman voodoo, as Will so cleverly named it. I am one of those crazies though, who wants to believe in all that hogwash.

That being said, my dream-come-true song for this evening is “Eulogy.” I have wanted to watch Tool perform that since I first heard the eerie percussion, and the guitar-splosion around the 2 minute mark. Maynard’s beautifully angry vocals seal the deal, especially the nearly 15 second scream of “Goodbye” at the end. So good it makes me want to immediately start the track over. Which I will be doing at least 3 times today in hopes that it will unlock the vault. No matter what they play though, it will be Tool and there is nothing to compare to that.

I need to move to Vermont already...

What is it with me & disposable cameras? They seem to magically morph themselves. The other day I developed the Coachella camera, so I figured I'd also take the one that had been sitting on my desk for years. I was sure it was from a Vegas trip. Hah. This round goes to you, Fujifilm. Turns out it was the _missing_ Coventry camera, the one I was convinced I'd lost. (_Now_ I'm sure I've lost the Vegas camera.) But it was definitely cool to find this camera - it's a shame we were too wasted to take any decent pictures at the show. You had to be stoned to deal with that mud, man.

Despite having to be knee-deep in cow shit, I'm glad I did it; I doubt I'd be saying that if I had done it sober :P Vermont is beautiful. After Coventry, I seriously considered moving up there.

The pictures (and this article )make me wonder why I haven't acted on that already...

MMW - Live - 5/24/07

Medeski Martin & Wood
Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, VA
May 24, 2007, 6:00PM
Ticket Price $25
Opening Act: Homemade Bread

The evening was beautiful - my first time seeing Medeski Martin & Wood and my first visit to the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden. Being there, I remembered how I love plants (not just the ones you smoke). I felt an instant sense of peace when I walked through the gates. The flowers and the greenery were in full bloom, little hippie children were running around, and the weather was ideal. I made a spur of the moment decision to go to the show, so I figured it would be a solo venture. Luckily, Amanda had the day off and accompanied me.

We got there about midway through the opening band’s set. Homemade Bread they were called, and they sounded pretty good. Their style was funky and jazzy, and the vocals were solid. The saxophone player, David Gay I believe, really impressed me. Definitely want to check out more from these guys, but I’m having difficulties locating them on the web, can’t even find ‘em on Myspace. I think they need my marketing assistance ;o)

I used the break before MMW to wander around and snap some more pictures of the gardens. Gorgeous! I can’t believe I go to Richmond so frequently and don’t take advantage of that place.

The stroll through the plant labyrinth (along with the beers) had me nicely relaxed and primed for the MMW set. The crowd cheered as John Medeski made his way over to the piano, with Chris Wood and Billy Martin following shortly there after. They each took their time warming up – Medeski getting used to the feel of the piano, Wood tuning his upright bass, Martin organizing his giant arsenal of percussion equipment. Unlike a rock ensemble, where the first song is like a blast to the face; Medeski, Martin, and Wood slowly built up to their introductory number. (Disclaimer: I wasn’t able to identify the tunes by name since I am not very well versed in the MMW catalog). They started off with a straight-up jazz piece. As the intensity built, Martin and Wood brought the rhythm, laying the foundation for Medeski to show his stuff. It wasn’t long before he was standing and strumming the strings of the grand piano as if it were a stringed instrument. For the second song, Medeski pulled out his melodica and Wood switched to the electric bass, and the sound shifted from jazz to world music. They got into some deep grooves throughout their 90 minute set, but the highlight was definitely the encore cover of “What’d I Say?”. People who had been seated all night got up and joined the rest of us in the hippie shuffle. MMW was exactly what the doctor ordered for me, but I heard some folks commenting that it was too jazzy for their tastes. My guess is that most of these people miss the guitar. I thought it was a refreshing change to have the focus be on the piano; I miss that instrument in music. Definitely seeing this trio whenever they come around Virginia again.

Attention Deadheads

I have said this before, but now I'm fully convinced - SIRIUS really loves the hippies. The satellite radio company announced today that they will be devoting a new channel to the music of the Grateful Dead and its band members. 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to "shake it, shake it Sugaree." Still no word on the exact launch date; I'm hoping it nicely coincides with my summer concert adventures. The 40+ minute version of "Dark Star" doesn't work so well for short jaunts around town, but it sure does pass the time on "a long, strange trip."

Johnny Blaze - Busted

Don't know if this has already been posted...

Method Man arrested for pot possession

May 19, 2007 - Grammy Award-winning rapper Method Man lived up to his stage name - Staten Island slang for marijuana - when he was busted by a toll-booth cop for smoking a blunt, police said yesterday.

Method Man, a k a Clifford Smith, 'fessed up to carrying about 28 grams of dope in his 2005 green Lincoln immediately after being stopped by a bridge-and-tunnel cop as he drove into Manhattan at about 10 p.m. Thursday.

He was about to pay the toll for the Battery Tunnel in Brooklyn when Officer Donald Johnston, spotting his car's expired inspection sticker, pulled him over, according to the criminal complaint.

When the rapper rolled down his window, the cop was hit with a waft of marijuana smoke and noticed two pot-filled cigars and a plastic bag containing even more grass in the car.

When Method Man said he had yet more pot under the driver's seat, he was taken into custody without a fuss, said a police source, who added, "I guess he was feeling mellow."

Method Man was released on his own recognizance yesterday after having been arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court.

Someone keep me away from the record store...

I've had two "Oh my God I can't believe I never heard of him!" moments today. Life is always a little brighter when new music hits your ears.

First one is thanks to Dave. I checked out the track on his post about Sir Doug, and it totally clicked.

The second discovery occurred just a few minutes ago when I left the office to run some errands. I turned on the Sirius Blues channel, and the Mike Bloomfield (who I am just now learning about) they were playing was so good it almost hurt. The guitar licks cut into me like a razor, and I am a total sucker for some funky keyboard. Have a listen -

Someone upstairs must be testing my resolve, since I can not afford to buy any music right now. When I get a little extra, though, I _must have_ Sir Doug's _Mendocino_ and this _Super Session_ by Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper, and Stephen Stills!

Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit

Col. Bruce Hampton & The Aquarium Rescue Unit
Innsbrook Pavilion in Glen Allen, VA
May 9, 2007, 6:30 PM

Even though I’ve been to the Innsbrook Pavilion many times before, it still trips me up that the place is nestled inside a giant office park. Not your typical location for a concert venue, but somehow the folks over there have made it work. There are some drawbacks to the area, though. For one, the crowd is normally littered with white-collar professionals who are much more interested in social hour than music. Secondly, the security is tighter than the proverbial duck’s arse. While the police presence didn’t confront me none, the constant chitter-chatter certainly cheesed me off. I meandered through the crowd searching for a quiet haven to enjoy the show, which I did, right in front of the speaker. It’s sad when that’s the only place you can go and actually hear over the talking, but hey, you do what you have to do.

By the time I got settled, the sun was setting and the Aquarium Rescue Unit was already about 30 minutes in to their set. The group, considered the forerunner of the modern day jam band scene, has had an ever-changing lineup since its inception in the late 80s. Wednesday night, the ARU consisted of some familiar faces to me – founding member and “Godfather of Jam” Col. Bruce Hampton, current Widespread Panic guitarist Jimmy Herring, and the Allman Brothers Band’s current bassist Oteil Burbridge as well as Jeff Sipe aka
