Need a lil sympathy from my MogFam

Posted over 4 years ago
Well folks, I have been dealt the crushing blow I've only read about until now. My favorite venue, "Starr Hill Music Hall":http://www.starrhill.com/Events, is closing its doors tomorrow night. I felt like I could cry when I read "the news":http://www.starrhill.com/NewsItem/132. Sure, the floor felt like it could collapse under the weight of 400 dancing hippies - sure, it got hotter than hades in there - but it was _my_ spot. The sound quality was always superior, and the intimacy between the crowd and performers was unrivaled. Looks like they're moving all of their shows to a new location, "the Satellite Ballroom":http://www.satelliteballroom.com/. And I don't particularly like the group that's performing the farewell show tomorrow night, so I guess this is goodbye... To add insult to injury - I can't find YouTube footage of a single show I've attended there! At least there's audio - here's some Dark Star Orchestra, caught them many times at good 'ole Starr Hill :{

  1. mister gary at work again says Aw man, I hate losing good venues. In Detroit in the late 90's, there was this awesome all-ages venue (run by a guy who later became a close acquaintance of mine) called the IO. I love, love, LOVED this place, though it barely kept the doors open for a year. Such a sad thing, saying goodbye to great music holes. **pours out a 40 for Starr Hill**

  2. jimmybearpearson says My heart sincerely goes out to you. When I was in college, there was a wonderful, geodesic dome deathtrap called P.B. Scotts up the hill in Blowing Rock. They eventually closed it due to hazards and age... But before they did? I saw B.B. King (with about 100 other people). I saw EARLY R.E.M. (gardening at night with 120 of my closest school buds). The Outlaws, Lots of others. I still miss it. But BOY was it a wonderful part of my history.

  4. kat3260 says mister gary - awww you didn't have to pour out a *whole* 40 - the concert gods have done enough today :P it is quite sad for me, though I don't go to many indoor shows during the summer. But it's definitely gonna be weird this fall when I have to visit the replacement venue. jimmybear - B.B King and Lucille up close and personal. Wow! And The Outlaws!!! I'd miss that venue too. Hopefully I'll find a new favorite real soon...

  6. kat3260 says Blair - Thank you. I really do feel silly for being so sad. That's why I had to turn to MOG where people understand these things. You'll take any chance to zing that moving out west thing in there, won't ya? :P

  8. Dale says I've never had the misfortune of losing a favorite live music venue, but I have lost a few dance clubs in my life, so I empty a liter of tap water at your loss.

  9. Girlcrawl says Sorry to hear that you are losing your favourite venue - such places really do work their way into one's heart, but at least you have fabulous memories to carry. Great song post!

  10. kat3260 says Dale - consider yourself a lucky man. As of yesterday, I had no clue that I had lost my favorite venue, so I was there with ya. Thanks for the tap water :P Girlcrawl - It's a shame that I took that place for granted. Stupidly, I hadn't even considered the prospect of them closing the doors. But you're right - the memories, although they're very hazy in spots, will always be with me. Glad you enjoyed the song - the Dark Star Orchestra was insane in that venue
