I am crazy about Blind Melon’s music, and it is beyond difficult for me to articulate any further than that. There is no combination of subject and predicate that can say it better than “I love them.” Once something really hits me on that soul level, I lose the ability to speak about it with impartiality. I’m not even gonna try.
The loss of Shannon Hoon in 1995 was nearly as painful to me as the loss of Kurt Cobain the year before. I was getting ready to start high school, and my idolization of musicians was at its peak. Shannon _was_ Blind Melon to me, and for that reason, I am very apprehensive about the current reunion. When I listen to my Blind Melon CDs, the music is great – but I know that Shannon is the reason I adore it rather than just like it. I know his voice is grating to some, and not particularly “good” by textbook standards (just like Janis Joplin), but it just completely does it for me.“Mouthful Of Cavities” is one of those songs – the kind I get lost in. The piano, the vocal harmonies between Shannon Hoon and Jena Kraus, the lyrics; I get goosebumps every single time. I would never willingly choose a favorite Blind Melon tune, but if someone had a knife to my throat, this would be the one I named.
