WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

The circus came to town...

Posted about 1 year ago
Imagine that about ¾ of your year is spent living in hotel rooms, or on a bus with at least four or five other people, or flying - and then pouring your heart out night after night on a stage in front of hungry audiences who have paid for your performance. It sounds like a glamorous fantasy for a lot of us, but the reality is tough. The road has broken so many souls over the years. This Mule song seems to me like a personal account of life as a traveling musician. The depth of this track is just one example of why I love Warren Haynes – it starts getting really good around the 3 minute mark - I mean like whoa - and then again at the 4.5 minute mark. Oh how I love this song. Some may say 9 minutes is too long...but what about 9 minutes in heaven?~A primadonna with a premonition feels like he's preachin' to the choirA superstar filled with superstition can't pull himself out of the mireAll you ever dreamed of is finally in your reach but careful what you wish forIf you don't practice what you preachThe circus came to town, I guess it must have stayedIt's like an endless paradeAll these people you can see through like ghosts, maybe you've seen too muchNothing's real, nothing you can feel, no one you can touchStrangers stare in silence, they think they know your mindNo place to jump off, that's the way the game's designedAnother new day dawns, another sunset fadesIt's like an endless paradeMusic, music and more music imploding inside your brainThe life that you have chosen did it finally drive you insanePsychophantic tirades fill your head with ammunitionSights set on your enemies but you keep losing your positionReluctantly you face the day try to get your gameface onWhat used to be a fantasy has now become a marathonEvery heart you ever broke, all the people you've betrayedAnother new day dawnsAnother sunset fadesYeh, the circus came to town, I guess it must have stayedIt's like an endless parade~

  6. Paul Busch says Charlie Watts memorably described his first 25 years with The Stones as, "5 years work and 20 years hanging around". Warren basically takes it down a notch, but I think he loves the touring and the people. We all keep the flame for live music, becuase in the end, and I'm sure I'll get some criticism here....Live music is where it's at. Where we all come together. Peace Paul

  7. kat3260 says Live music is TOTALLY where it's at. I'm a concert junkie who hasn't had a fix in over a month. Sad times. Warren definitely loves (and is addicted to) his line of work, that's apparent; but I'm sure he has grappled with the monotony and harshness of it all as almost everyone does at some point or another. an endless parade...

  8. debi says Feeling the Mule love here - think we need a Mog party at Mountain Jam IV (Hunter Mtn NY) in May. The lineup is better than Coachella imho Mountain Jam is a three day music festival in Upstate New York, held at the world-class ski resort, Hunter Mountain. Radio Woodstock and Warren Haynes will once again co-produce this event during the first weekend after Memorial Day, May 31st thru June 1st, 2008. In 2007, Mountain Jam was the largest music festival in the Northeast/New England.

  9. kat3260 says Debi I totally agree - I want to go to Mountain Jam so bad. I heard about the lineup last week sometime and was talking about how much more I'd be willing to pay for that than Coachella. I want to do it. Must research and find someone to go with me :)

  16. kat3260 says Charles...you really should listen to more. "Beautifully Broken" is another of the Mule's slow creeper songs...after several unsuccessful attempts to upload it, I have given up...but trust me :) Todd - I need to watch the whole Conchords season - "Business time" cracks me up, one of my favorite comedy contributions in recent months Bruce - you've stumped me again! what is that from?

  20. debi says Kat - I'm so excited - I convinced hubby to go to Mountain Jam - just booked 2 nights at the Katskill Lodge (I'm not a camper) . I'm working on another local Mogger (OldRockr) to join. This could be a great Mog meet on the mountain.

  21. HelenMarie says Wonderful 9 minutes... ...whoa is right. Bittersweet. I can handle way more than that! Hate to bring the mood down, but with the lyric, "No place to jump off, that's the way the game's designed" I couldn't help but to be reminded of a heart wrenchingly documentary I watched just the other night...24 people were filmed in the process of jumping to to their deaths off the San Fran bridge in 2004. Sorry. Okay...back to "Business Time". I have Lizzie to thank for that...Thanks Lizzie!

  22. kat3260 says "Business Time" is the best one for me too Todd Debi - Ahhh now I really REALLY wanna go! I'm not a camper either. How much did the rooms run ya? That would be the deciding factor for me, well that and someone to go with me...but if ya'll are gonna be there I might make the trek solo ;)
