wreckless eric

guess what movie i saw last night... i was charmed._born eric goulden in newhaven, sussex, england, wreckless eric became interested in music through the pub rock scene of the mid-’70s. wreckless eric gained notoriety as part of stiff records’ highly eccentric roster of punk and new wave artists during the late ‘70s. with his whiny, slurred cockney voice, eric couldn’t carry a tune, but that didn’t prevent him from being an enjoyable, if limited, rock & roller. with his early stiff singles “whole wide world,” “semaphore signals,” and “take the cash (k.a.s.h.),” eric bashed out a series of ragged, chaotic, three-chord punk-pop singles driven by his pent-up energy and a knack for melodic pop hooks. wreckless eric never had a big pop hit, but his engaging sense of humor and fondness for simple rock & roll helped make him a cult figure who continued to have a following into the ‘90s._

  2. patradio says When I graduated from high school, a friend gave a copy of _Big Smash_, a double album of Wreckless Eric stuff. I played the hell out of it that summer and at college, much to the dismay of anyone within earshot. His voice is an acquired taste. I loved the tunes, though. _Big Smash_ has recently been rereleased on emusic.com, if you have an account there.

  3. Lady Miss Ian says Eric's such a charming little squeaker. Like Patradio said above, Big Smash has been re-released by Stiff Records this spring. It's a double-disc set with some great bonus stuff on it. They also re-released Rachel Sweet's "Fool Around", Any Trouble "Where are all the Nice Girls", Dirty Looks complete collection, and Tracey Ullman's "You Broke My Heart in 17 Places." Looks like they are going to continue to re-release stuff from their vaults, now that they're back from the dead.

  4. kaleef says mk: yeah, agreed (: pat: his voice is def an acquired taste. my brother loved this stuff and would blast it in his bedroom when i was much younger. that was my first taste, and i haven't heard eric since then. he is funny as hell to boot! seeing that movie, i was like, HELL YEAH! lady: well if i didn't have enough stuff to buy on my tune list already... (; now, are they re-mastering any of this? or just adding bonus material?

  16. soulrocket says i thought "whole wide world" made it to the uk top 40. i got me the tune when i was a kid, it was included in a great compilation titled "oh what a summer". stiff was a great label that brought us, among the other names cited here, the damned.
