MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

It's been way too long. The Youth are back with easily their best in years. While it doesn't match the dissonant beauty and fury of their early days, this is my favorite since Goo.

where's a good starting place for sonic youth in terms of a first album to buy?

Evol! Everyone else will tell you Daydream Nation. It's great, but Evol absolutely rocks my world every time I hear it. Definitely not the easiest listening, but majestic and sweeping and angry and confrontational and jarring all at the same time. Bad Moon Rising and Sister are also terrific. If you want a more immediately approachable Sonic Youth, both Goo and Dirty are a bit more inviting on first listen.

Cool, glad you like this one. I haven't heard it yet but everyone else is abstaining from reviewing it too thoroughly... which made me think it wasn't that great.

Certainly doesn't rank with their best, but first in a long time that isn't unfocused or just plain boring. Also, much more straightforward. I don't think Jim O'Rourke, despite his many talents, did much for the last few albums.

I got started with Washing Machine, actually, and now SY is my favorite band! I like Rather Ripped, but while it is good it is nothing really new for them...I think that is why the reviews are rather "ho hum". I admit I kind of like Nurse better...

I will have to give Sonic Nurse another shot. So many of the recent ones kinda fell flat for me, but I need to relisten to everything from Dirty on one more time. I was such a huge fan and then each album got harder for me to get my head around
