WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Those crazy Austrians.

The '80s have always been a part of my music collection. Highly influenced by VH1 Classics and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. There is just something about this genre that intrigues me. If I were to pick a favorite '80s song, this would be it. Even though you cannot understand the lyrics, it is still a great song, and tells of the life of Amadeus. It is a good song to listen to and you can learn something from it, it's win-win! While on the topic of Falco we cannot forget "Der Kommissar", and those filthy one-hit wonderers After The Fire's version. Falco was widely known around the lands and has had much posthumous fame.

  1. champy says I think its a good song because it sounds so dramatic, yet there is something intrinsically so ridiculous about the whole production (from the music video to the foreign language). most of my favorite songs have some ridiculous dichotemies! Rock on Amadeus

  2. ivylander says Hearing the name Falco reminds me of a highlight of my former career as a travel writer. In the early '80s, I was invited to join a group of "international travel journalists" on a bus-and-camping tour of the northeastern U.S. I was the only American among 18 or so, traveling under an array of differing flags: France, South Africa, Japan, Italy, France, and several others I forget. However, very few of these journalists were what you'd call top-drawer. One of the women, Brigitte, represented the Austrian equivalent of Tiger Beat, a highly caffeinated monthly called Rennbahn Express. She had absolutely no background or interest in travel, but she had been deeply steeped in the pop music of the day. Which would have been fun if she had shown the least curiosity about the music she didn't know (i.e., anything outside the Top 40). She would say to me in a thick accent: "Do you know Pete Townshend? He is a cheenius!" or "Do you know Supertramp? Zey are cheeniuses!" (Apologies for the un-PC rendering of the German accent. I do it not to make fun, but for historical accuracy.) But the most special shrine in her musical heart was the one dedicated to Falco. She simply was incapable of letting a conversation (even one not about music) slip by without commenting on his brilliance. To her, Falco was the cheenius of all pop cheeniuses. To the rest of us on the trip, a virtual UN of listeners more or less interested in popular music, Falco was a derivative little pygmy. Time has not changed my mind. Blame Brigitte.

  3. jordansinferno says Thank you Champy for letting me use wiktionary one more time tonight to understand a couple of the words you used. I liked your story Ivylander, the German accent came through just fine.
