Bad Religion's "The Gray Race"

Posted about 5 years ago
The other day I picked up BR's "The Gray Race" at Repo Records on South Street in Philadelphia, a great record store for those visiting (I'm sure residents are already in the know). I remembered hearing 'A Walk' on the radio a while back, and though it was never one of my favorite songs, I picked up the album to try and complete my BR album collection. I'm happy I got the album, but it is certainly not one of the band's best. I understand the new found pressure on Greg at that time to write an album without guitarist Brett Gurewitz, and in light of that I think it is a solid effort that doesn't disappoint, but that also never seems to peak. The tracks are consistently above average, my favorites being 'Ten in 2010' and 'Come Join Us,' tagged above. If you don't own any Bad Religion albums, you should. Here are my top five recommendations, which coincidently are the best albums in my opinion, starting with my favorite:1. Stranger Than Fiction 2. Suffer3. The New America4. Recipe For Hate5. The Process of Belief

  3. joeventi says Yes. Greg Graffin is one smart dude. Lyrical prowess aside... "Graffin double majored in anthropology and geology as an undergraduate at the University of California, Los Angeles. He went on to earn a masters degree in geology from UCLA and received his Ph.D. in evolutionary paleontology from Cornell University. However, according to a video clip originally from the Bad Religion official website and also available from The Cornell Evolution Project homepage, the PhD thesis was officially a Zoology PhD thesis, supervised by William B. Provine at Cornell University. The thesis was entitled "Monism, Atheism and the Naturalist Worldview: Perspectives from Evolutionary Biology". It is described as being essentially an evolutionary biology PhD but having also relevance to history and philosophy of science" (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greg_Graffin) ...and all that while putting out some of the most important punk albums of our time. Not too shabby.
