And the award for creepiest song of the day goes to...

Posted about 1 year ago

It's been a looooong time since I really listened to this song. Slint loomed so large as influences to the math-rock/post-punk scene here in Atlanta when I first started really playing in bands, but now you hardly ever hear anyone mention them.

I love this song though. It's unnerving. The drum beat makes you feel like ocean waves are washing over your head. The hushed, spoken vocal is super-high on the creepiness scale. I honestly get a little chill by the end when he screams "did I miss you!?". There are only a handful of great songs about shipwrecks and drowning... this is one of them. Wonderful early Brian Paulson recording too (one of my heroes).

On a side note, I always found it very intriguing that Slint viewed their lineup to be incomplete. They were likely going where they wanted musically, but apparently they did not want to be doing vocals. It cracks me up that such a seminal underground release prominently posts "interested female vocalists write 1864 Douglas Blvd. Louisville, KY 40205".

rawkkiddoh: I often wondered if it was an inside joke.

madrid: I know! I can't imagine what it would have sounded like to have female vocals over Slint. I imagine oodles of cassettes from Diamonda Gallas wannabes. :)

This song also was part of Kids' o.s.t., that's where I first heard it.

Interesting that you find it to be creepy. I always thought that there's a layer of tragedy to it.

I enjoy seeing what different people see in different songs :)

Anna: Oh, it's tragic, certainly. But there's something about death by drowning (especialy at sea) that I just find rather creepy. :)

You have a point. Hmmm... how many death by fire songs are there?? I can think of pleanty of arson/pyro songs, but not death by burning.

what about buried alive? its on the kids soundtrack, but it is not in the movie, not sure where it would have fit, but couldn't they have dropped some of the folk implosion for this one.

    Buried alive brrrrr.

Death in the sea is the lesser of all evils.

I'll be waiting for that thread!
