dEUS... just add syrup.

Posted about 1 year ago

One of my all-time favorite bands is dEUS. They are the best thing to come out of Belgium since the waffle. And that's saying a lot. Not just because I love waffles so much, but because there are a lot of amazing bands from Belgium (Evil Superstars leaps to mind for one!).

But of all those great bands, dEUS owns my heart. And I am often shocked at how few people in the states know about them. Well, maybe not shocked... since the only reason I knew about them is a Belgian friend turned me on to them years back (I, in return, convinced her of the brilliance of Neil Young's early catalog... so it was a nice trade).

But finding the right dEUS song as an intro to the band can be difficult. They are all over the place, and no one song really epitomizes how strangely awesome a dEUS album can be. I can go with one of their more immediately accessible tracks like "Hotellounge (Be The Death Of Me)", a fantastic song, but not indicative of their other material. On the other end of the spectrum we have something like "Fell Off The Floor, Man" which is just plain wacky. And there there is everything in between.

So, today, I'm instead going for simple and intimate with one of my favorite songs... "Disappointed In The Sun" from In A Bar, Under The Sea. If you have never listened to the band and like this, I recommend diving in with both this album and Worst Case Scenario. They are often the soundtrack looping inside my head, and it makes me a happy person. :)

And for a little contrast... here's a video of "Suds & Soda" from Worst Case Scenario

I got to this party WAY late...but I remember hearing 'Hotellounge' for the first time and playing it about 50 consecutive times!!

satisfiedmind2: It's such an amazing song. It's one of those that just *sounds* so amazing that you have to listen over and over again. "You move me 'round and 'round... I guess" :) It's usually the first track I play for people by them, but then it's so different than everything else they did.

It was the first dEUS song I ever heard...love at first listen! Ever heard of the singer/songwriter Adem? Does a beautiful cover:

satisfiedmind2: Wow. That's really great. That's like Donovan and Nick Drake meets Andrew Bird. Such a lovely twist of the song. I'll have to check out more of his stuff!

on the question of favorite dEUS album, i have always maintained that i can't not equally love Worst Case Scenario and In A Bar, Under The Sea as each has taken a life of its own. i am ambivalent toward the third and fourth albums, though.

good choice of tunage! also, Suds & Soda is a very strong after-Intro intro. good stuff, thanks.

poebegone: Yeah, those two albums are inseparable to me. Like their Rubber Soul/Revolver. Very different in ways, but they just seem like call and response. Imposible to choose.

I haven't given the newer records the chance they deserve probably, but no, they are not the same band. I still love them though.

i was going for a punk Sebadoh vs. indie Sebadoh metaphor but Rubber Soul/Revolver probably works better. no, they are not the same band, and yes, i will continue to give any new record a chance.

ps- Hotellounge is my favorite dEUS song, and that cover is dope!

There's a rare single/EP they released called Zea which is incredible too. The song "Zea" is nealy on par with Hotellounge honestly.

It's like Hotellounge, Intro and W.C.S. all mixed together. :)

    Thanks for the welcome!

Saw these kats in Ireland a few years back & they BLEW me away - instafan !!!  Glad to see you're of the same mind when it comes to dEUS...

It is a shame they aren't better known in the states... guess it's our job to pass on the good tunes :)

I only have Pocket Revolution at present - so it looks like I have some new albums to purchase !!!  :)

Lizziegreeneyes: Oh wow... yeah, if you like the newer ones, the older albums will really blow your mind. I missed them the one time they came though here, just out of sheer stupidity and being out of the loop. I've been kicking myself ever since. It's on par with missing the Pixies!

I wouldn't even add syrup. And that says a lot 'cause I'm a syrup kind of gal. ;)

I am not really capable of explaining dEUS's allure....if someone asked me, I'd respond that they got it.

As far as albums go, worst case scenario is an ideal crash in a bar, under the sea (yes, feel free to colour me undecided).

    :)

Anna: I guess the only thing I can pinpoint that is unique about dEUS is that they... have no boundaries. And I can't imagine anyone conceiving of their sound. It's just these various weird noises that come out of that combination of people. Now, THAT'S a band. Thanks for the comment!

    Lester: Ha!

my favorite song of theirs, nice to see a post about them. Popular Culture from the last album is really awesome too.  for those of you in america like me, great and cheap spot to get their latest is cd wow.

all orders are free shipping worldwide and they usually come out to around $15 US dollars which is almost what you'd pay here if it was released domestically anyway (which i'm sure won't be happening)

will get right on it - yeah - they're definitely on par with the Pixies ;)  Got the chance to finally see them when they toured a few years back... best money I ever spent - next to the money for the trip to Ireland to see the Electric Picnic !!!
