Christmas Music, Holiday Music, and Seasonal Music

Posted about 5 years ago
I'd like to start off saying that I know that not everyone likes holiday music, seasonal music, or Christmas music. I recognize that we all have different tastes in music...With that said, Christmas music has always been a part of my home near the end of the year. Growing up, it was Johnny Mathis, Burl Ives, and Frank Sonatra. Since having had our own cubs, it has been the wonderful chorales and tunes of Brass ensembles (The Canadian Brass and the brass ensembles from the Philly Philharmonic always get lots of play time) that are in our house in December.A picture I took while in Marco Island, Florida, USA (colored lights added to the palm on the right, later, for the fun of it).As a musician who has played brasswinds, woodwinds, and many kinds of strings, I must say that the warm, round, full sound of Brass ensembles always makes me enjoy holidays. This year, the Bears decided that some new interpretation of some traditional Christmas music was called for. So, by (family) popular demand, I did new arrangements of, and reinterpreted, and recorded 13 traditional Christmas tunes for acoustic guitar/bass trios and quartets. I also composed a new work of my own for inclusion, From Heaven To Earth (timely... Bear's dad had just died).I spent lots of time from July to September interpreting, playing, and recording these tunes - with lots of excellent help from my in-house critics, and my ever-so-excellent technical elves (the two cubs). The end result is pretty neat, and is actually a fun listen. The season inspired me to make Christmas music. What does holiday and Christmas music do for you? Make you think about?

  1. RainaRain says So whenever I hear The Chieftains I think of Christmas time. My family has always played their music. I just picture sitting in my log cabin like living room with a candle burning, two dimley lit lights above the fireplace, and the pretty christmas tree. It was always so relaxing.

  2. extraordinarypoems says I love "Celebrate Me Home" by Kenny Loggins. Celebrate Me Home Lyrics: Home for the holidays, I believe I’ve missed each and every face, Come on and play my music, Let’s turn on the love light in the place It’s time I found myself, Totally surrounded in your circles Whoa, my friends Please, celebrate me home, Give me a number, Please, celebrate me home Play me one more song, That I’ll always remember, And I can recall, Whenever I find myself too all alone, I can sing me home. Uneasy highway, Traveling where the westerly winds can fly, Somebody tried to tell me, But the men forgot to tell me why, I gotta count on being gone, Come on woman, come on daddy, Be what you want from me, I’m this strong, I’ll be weak Please, celebrate me home, Give me a number, Please, celebrate me home Play me one more song, That I’ll always remember, I can recall, Whenever I find myself too all alone, I can make believe I’ve never gone, I never know where I belong, Sing me home. Please, celebrate me home, Give me a number, Please, celebrate me home Play me one more song, Celebrate, celebrate Celebrate, celebrate Celebrate, celebrate Celebrate me home Please, celebrate me home, Please, celebrate me home, Well I’m finally here, But I’m bound to roam, Come on celebrate me home Well I’m finally here, But I’m bound to roam, Come on celebrate me home Well I’m finally here, But I’m bound to roam, Come on celebrate me home Please, celebrate me home, Please, celebrate me home, Please, celebrate me home, Please, celebrate me home, Please, celebrate me home, Please, celebrate me home, (fade) Artists: #

  4. bajita420 says OMG I LOVE CHRISTMAS MUSIC ok yes I'm a dork when it comes to the holidays, but I'm ok with that... I actually just heard a version of celebrate me home on the radio tonight, but it was done by a woman(sounded like a soul artist), don't know who though. My favorite top 5 christmas songs(in no order of course). 1. "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby(um hello its the number 1 selling christmas song ever!) 2. "Little Drummer Boy" by Bing Crosby and David Bowie(when bowie comes in with his high voice over Bings low voice, it just is this awesome combination) 3. "Dreidel Song/Chanukkah Song" by Unknown/Adam Sandler(cuz I'm a schickza) 4. "The Nutcracker Suite" by Tchaikovsky(such a good ballet/score and Brian Setzer does a swinging version of it on his christmas album) 5. "Feliz Navidad" by Jose Feliciano(cuz I grew up multi-lingual and this song is the only hit christmas song in spanish) Ok there are way more than that(and a lot better ones) but those are mine ok here's a couple more cuz I can't resist the power of christmas(in no order of course)! 6. "7 o'clock news/silent night" by Simon and Garfunkle (this shit still makes me cry every time!) 7. "Your a mean one Mr. Grinch" by ??? (one of my favorite christmas stories) 8. "Christmas Song" by Nat King Cole (all-time classic, no contest) 9. "Baby its cold outside/Santa Baby" by Dean Martin/Eartha Kitt 10. "Run Rudolph Run" by Chuck Berry Shout out to "Christmas Song" by Chipmunks "Christmas Time" by Vince Guaraldi(Charlie Brown) and "Little Saint Nick" by the Beach Boys

  5. jimmybearpearson says I have a must hear/loathe relationship with Holly Jolly Christmas, Burl Ives. It isn't Christmas time until I hear it, but I don't want to hear it a zillion times.

  6. extraordinarypoems says Bajita, I must know who the woman was singing "Celebrate Me Home" --- let's try to find out. Also, I love the Grinch too. My favorite song is "Where are You Christmas" from Jim Carey version. I like the Faith Hill version and the Cindy Lou Who version. "Where Are You Christmas" Where are you Christmas Why can't I find you Why have you gone away Where is the laughter You used to bring me Why can't I hear music play My world is changing I'm rearranging Does that mean Christmas changes too Where are you Christmas Do you remember The one you used to know I'm not the same one See what the time's done Is that why you have let me go Christmas is here Everywhere, oh Christmas is here If you care, oh If there is love in your heart and your mind You will feel like Christmas all the time I feel you Christmas I know I've found you You never fade away The joy of Christmas Stays here inside us Fills each and every heart with love Where are you Christmas Fill your heart with love
