Thoughts and a Tribute to Richard Wright

Posted about 1 year ago

Richard Wright was a true musician - one who truly influenced me musically and as a musician. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Richard (or any of his mates), he has been a big part of the sounds I've enjoyed over the years.

I've been lucky enough to see Richard play live (with Pink Floyd) in the late eighties here in Raleigh. Both concerts were a fulfilling, engaging, and tearful experience. You could feel the sound - you could feel the artists - even from a hundred yards away. I've been to many concerts, but have never been as enthralled as I was at those Floyd concerts...

My opinion is that Richard Wright was a musician's musician. He had mad skills on many instruments (and vocals). He could compose sounds and songs sublime. His understanding of the musical phrase stands out above the crowd - even in the rarified air in which artists like Pink Floyd work.

Richard, I hope you have sellout crowds in that great gig in the sky. May all your journeys be sweet and may all your dreams be fulfilled.

Here is my tribute to Richard.http://jimmybearpearson.com/moosic/WrightSong.mp3

I couldn't agree more.  I feel cheated that I didn't get to see Pink Floyd play with all the original members (not including syd barrett) and now I never will.

I did see Roger Waters and that was still an epic experience, but knowing that I didn't get to see the true Pink Floyd leaves a little hole in the things I've accomplished or done in my life. It's almost the same feeling of knowing I can never see Led Zeppelin with John Bonham, although I was too young to even remember when John died and Zeppelin was in state of touring turmoil.  Not that Floyd wasn't in a state of flux for the past couple decades, but while all members were still alive, there was that small hope that they'd form a reunion tour and get back together just once. And it happened and I missed it again.

I guess we'll always have Live from Pompeii:
