I think a lot of people with much better credentials than I have already posted about Erykah Badu's new album New Amerykah Part One, and if you want an incisive take on how she fits into the contemporary R&B scene, better look elsewhere. Still I have been listening to this album, just recreationally, for a couple of weeks and it seems like a really good one. It's passionate and smart and complicated and angry and very, very physical. And since I've been thinking about Curtis Mayfield a lot lately (see yesterday's post), I'm going to post the track from New Amerykah that most reminds me of him...not like she's copying, just more like she'd heard and loved and learned from him.
It's called "Cell".

I'm digging that Curtis connection. Another reminder that I need to hear this album.

Now that I'm looking for it, I'm seeing Curtis Mayfield's imprint everywhere...but especially on that Budos Band record that came out last year.

Being a longtime fan, I've been enjoying it thoroughly. And yes, there are alot of old school soul & R&B influences throughout. If you haven't seen it, check out the vid to the song "Honey" which Erykah gives definite kudos to the bands/artists who influenced her. It's a cool vid(you should be able to view it in her artist lounge here on Mog easily) and worth seeing.
