MOG MOG

WHERE E=MC HAMMER

Artist:
Track: You DId (Bomp Shooby Doody Bomp)
(128)

Can't remember who was asking me about Chuck Prophet, but the ex-Green on Red guitarist is one of my very favorite skewed (sort of) alt.country songwriters. We went to see him maybe a year ago, early show, all three of us, and I guess I was expecting something dark and mournful and bittersweet...but his show is actually kind of goofy. (In a good way.)

He's a fixture in the SF music scene...broke Kelley Stoltz, writes with Alejandro Escovedo, etc. etc. I've never had any real contact with him, but I'd guess, from his show, that he's about as nice and down to earth as they come.

I've tried three times to put a song on the MOG player, but so far unsuccessfully...will give it another shot in a little while.

I love Chuck Prophet and would see him all the time when I lived in SF. Homemade Blood is probably my favorite Prophet record. I think Prophet would have been more successful if he hadn't been a junkie for years. I also believe that people are turned off because he tends to sound like Tom Petty. He's very talented as is his wife Stephanie Finch. In fact, if it weren't for Stephanie I'm sure that Prophet wouldn't even be around to make music.

weird, I don't get the Tom Petty thing at all, but I haven't really listened to him in a long time, so maybe it's just not registering. I didn't realize he'd had a drug problem, that's too bad, though of course, lots of people who do make pretty great, very popular music anyway...he's okay now?

No Other Love is one of my favorite albums - Summertime Thing should be on the soundtrack for any summer vacation road trip.

He's working with Kelly Willis now, which is pretty cool. He produced her latest "Translated from Love" which is worth a listen.

And it looks like his next one comes out on YepRoc (who are signing everyone cool) in October.

I posted about Green On Red here . I really like Prophet's voice & it's so much better than Tom Petty's. I can see the resemblance somewhat due to the countryish roots rock present in both their music but that's about it. I first heard Chuck on a local radio station when his album "No Other Love" was released. They played "Summertime Thing" & "I Bow Down To Every Woman I See" alot. I also saw him play locally not long after that cd. The band & he looked really strung out but put on a great show anyway.
