I discovered a wonderful new songwriter a week or two ago, with one of those beautifully dark, echoey, gothic voices that give you the shivers. His name is Jeffrey Luck Lucas, and he's from San Francisco. He got his start in a garage band named the Morlocks, then took a break to earn a master's degree in cello performance and composition. (He's played cellor for a whole bunch of other excellent artists, including Neurosis and the Court and Spark.)You can check his music out at his myspace page, which is:http://www.myspace.com/jeffreylucklucasUnfortunately, he hasn't put up my absolute favorite song from his new album What We Whisper, which is called "In the Stars' Whirling." The song sounds like pitch black night dotted with stars, like regret lit faintly with hope, like a man at the end of his rope and the beginning of a whole new life, and you just have to hear it to believe it. And for that, you have to buy the record. But there are also a bunch of other really good songs -- "I Cry You All the Time" is probably my second favorite and it's on the player, and the instrumental "Grifos Muertos" is pretty great, too.I reviewed What We Whisper for Dusted a little while ago. I had to pretty much beg to be allowed to cover it, and not many other magazines seem to be paying attention. But give it a spin. It's utterly beautiful.
