Yes, but which Six Organs?

Ben Chasny is sort of the Kevin Bacon of new folk-psychedelia. He's in Comets on Fire, has a side project with a guy from Ghost, plays for Current 93 and knows pretty much everybody. He's also got another really excellent solo album out under the Six Organs of Admittance moniker. It's called The Sun Awakens and it's half finger-picked folk blues and half (one long track) psychedelic breakdown. So I interviewed him for PopMatters, but the one thing I didn't ask him is, what exactly are the six organs of admittance and, most importantly, are you counting eyes and ears as two or one? Because if they're just one, you have to count an organ that I'm not sure was really intended for admittance, if you know what I mean. But of course, I chickened out. Here's him talking about his new album:http://www.popmatters.com/music/interviews/sixorgansofadmittance-060809.shtmlThere's a video of him playing live, and I have to say, if you get the chance, go see him. It's a lot more rock than you'd expect. He's sort of flailing in the wind over his guitar, making the angles that cause the right kind of feedback, I guess, and his band, just a bass player and drummer (the bass player switches to guitar occasionally) are pretty great, too.

  1. DerekSunshine says Hopefully, the six organs are the "six sensory organs according to Buddhism":http://www.sacred-texts.com/bud/bits/bits030.htm Otherwise, I guess you could count the nerves in the skin.
