WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Richard Thompson, "Sweet Warrior"

Posted over 2 years ago
It'd be easy to ignore another record by Richard Thompson, because he's so dependably excellent. That would be a mistake though, because no one is better at what he does, a sort of celtic-based but kitchen sink-influenced brand of passionate folk rock...as bitterly sardonic as anything you'll hear. Thompson has a new album called "Sweet Warrior" out, and it's a real sleeper. Here's one of the best songs on it, a very pretty piece called "Poppy Red".

  1. cuddlefish says All these years and I have yet to be disappointed with a Richard Thompson album. This new album went under my radar. Thanks Jenny!

  2. jenny says That's kind of how I feel. He so untrendy that you could almost miss him, which would be a shame. His records always sort of sound the same, but they're always so good...you play them a couple of times and it's like they've been with you forever.

  3. Cody B says RT is THE MAN. I remember a show 15 years ago in MPLS. where his drummer broke his arm the night before and he just came out and played acoustic, mostly covers, mostly by request. One of my fave all time shows. His guitar playing and just about everything about him is underrated.

  5. jenny says I have to go see him sometime. I keep meaning to, but it's always $40 a ticket when I don't have any money.

  7. Chaos Cowboy says I love RT. Love, love, love! I've seen him a few times. Once with his band and a few times without. He's just amazing regardless. I have yet to pick up his new one, but I will for sure. I don't really think it's fair to say his albums all sound the same, but I do think he changes very slowly over time. If you went back and listened to Rumor and Sigh, its texture and themes would differ a lot from Old Kit Bag. Like alot of artists at his level, I think he grows and changes very gradually. He certainly has nothing to prove, after all. Anyone who knows about him already knows he's the F'n man.
