God Save the Clientele

Posted over 2 years ago
This is somewhat out of character for me, but I've been totally enjoying The Clientele's new album, God Save the Clientele. It's quite soft and poppy, with strings and Beach Boy harmonies and just about everything I hate. But I keep going back to it, because it's just so damned pretty...especially super-slow, suitably nocturnal "No Dreams Last Night" and shuffling "Queen of Seville" which has sort of a muted bossa nova feel. "Bookshop Casanova," though, is maybe the best of the lot, braced with staccato rock guitars and dripping with string embellishments...It and "Garden at Night," which follows immediately after, are the "rock" songs on the album, a bit more like Luna than G500 and rather stunning. The Clientele, if you're just coming in, is Alasdair MacClean's long-running dream-pop project, based physically in Scotland, but musically dwelling somewhere in the land of Felt and Galaxie 500. God Save the Clientele is only the band's third album. It was produced by Mark Nevers of Lambchop and is out now on Merge Records.Listen here: http://www.mergerecords.com/jukeboxes/dynamic_jukebox.php?juke_id=39Or go see them (and the excellent, spooky-pop duo Beach House):18 May 2007 Hailey's Denton, TX, US w/ Beach House 19 May 2007 Emo's Lounge Austin, TX, US w/ Beach House 21 May 2007 Modified Tempe, AZ, US w/ Beach House 22 May 2007 Casbah San Diego, CA, US w/ Beach House 24 May 2007 Knitting Factory Los Angeles, CA, US w/ Beach House, Pipas 25 May 2007 Howie & Son's Pizza & Beer Parlor Visalia, CA, US w/ Beach House 26 May 2007 Great American Music Hall San Francisco, CA, US w/ Beach House 27 May 2007 Doug Fir Portland, OR, US w/ Beach House 28 May 2007 Crocodile Cafe Seattle, WA, US w/ Beach House 31 May 2007 400 Bar Minneapolis, MN, US w/ Beach House 01 Jun 2007 High Noon Madison, WI, US w/ Beach House 02 Jun 2007 Subterranean Chicago, IL, US w/ Beach House 03 Jun 2007 Magic Stick Detroit, MI, US w/ Beach House 04 Jun 2007 El Mocambo Toronto, ON, Canada w/ Beach House 06 Jun 2007 Club Lambi Montreal, QC, Canada w/ Beach House 08 Jun 2007 Bowery Ballroom New York, NY, US w/ Beach House, Pipas 09 Jun 2007 Museum of Fine Arts Boston, MA, US w/ Beach House B 2004

  1. DerekSunshine says As far as melody and vocals go, the Clientele are very rooted in 60's pop-rock like the Beach Boys and the Left Banke. However, as I was listening to this record, I was really struck by how tight and complex the arrangements are. It's almost like The Sea and Cake covering The Nazz. Where a lot of baroque pop groups tend to go over the top with the instrumentation and vibe, The Clientele approach their songs with a very serious level of musicanship.

  2. jenny says That's very eloquent...I couldn't really identify why I liked this more than other, similar sorts of soft, pretty pop, but I knew I did. I'm liking that Ladybug Transistor album, too. Same sort of thing. There was a Clientele track on Survive and Advance, a 15-year anniversary comp Merge put out a few years ago. I remember being very dismissive of it initially. Then it sort of wormed its way in and became one of my very favorites...it's still on my iPod. It's called, let's see, "Breathing Soft and Low." This record seems to be following the same trajectory, but faster.

Thanks for bringing this band up. I must check them out. I guess I'm the opposite when it comes to "quite soft and poppy, with strings and Beach Boy harmonies" - I'm there.
