The English Beat...goes on

Posted over 2 years ago
The English Beat, one of the pre-eminent second-wave ska bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s, are touring again this summer, hitting a few spots in the US and a bunch in the UK and more or less taking up residence at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach (CA?). If you were around for the first few years of MTV, songs like "Mirror in the Bathroom," "I Confess" and "Save It for Later" are, most likely, embedded somewhere in the limbic section of your brain, along with similar cuts by The Specials, The Toasters and Madness. If you mostly missed the 1980s, their blend of Jamaican ska, proto-rap and jittery new wave guitars may sound vaguely like The Police. The band broke up in 1983, and members splintered off to form the Fine Young Cannibals (with Roland Gift) and General Public. The Greek Theater date in LA is with UB40.Dates: 5/24/2007 Alexandria, Birchmere 5/25/2007 Philadelphia, World Cafe Live 5/26/2007 Lebanon,Lebanon Opera House 5/28/2007 New Jersey Shore, Point Pleasant Beach 6/2/2007 East Hampton, Stephen Talkhouse 6/5/2007 Bristol, Colston Hall 6/6/2007 Nottingham,The Royal Centre 6/12/2007 Glasgow, Clyde Auditorium 6/14/2007 Manchester,Carling Manshester Apollo 6/15/2007 Newcastle Upon Tyne, Newcastle City Hall 6/17/2007 Brighton, Brighton Dome 6/18/2007 Birmingham, Symph.Hall 6/19/2007 Bournemouth, Bournemouth Opera House 6/21/2007 London, Carling Hammersmith Apollo 6/25/2007 Sheffield, Sheffield CIty Hall 6/26/2007 Dublin, Olympia Theatre 6/30/2007 New York, B.B. 2. oharris69 says Don't you mean The Beat? :-P Back in NZ we always thought it was funny the way many UK bands had to change the name due to some copyright restriction from some unknown band in the US. Mind you, in the case of Icehouse from Aussie (my first concert back in 1982!) it was probably just as well they didn't stay Flowers... ...and speaking of the "2nd wave", The Specials in original line-up (not Special AKA, etc) I would love to have seen, and another little-known classic of the time is The Members "Chelsea Nightclub" album, exploring more of a punk than ska sensibility. But then that leads us to Poly Styrene's X-Ray Spex, and so on, and so on... Enjoy!

  3. jenny says Charlatans UK, too. I just reviewed a record by another band called "the beat" and he had to change his name to Paul Collins Beat. Understandably a popular name.

  4. Jo says Wow, The Beat! I used to love them, but I was way too young to see them live first time around (like with so many acts, and now, 20 years on, I am slowly catching up as they all reunite and tour again) - I feel very tempted to go get myself tickets to the Hammersmith Apollo gig straight away (and apply for bankruptcy next, as I have been tempted A LOT lately), better go sleep on it.... [sigh] Thanks for the tip, Jenny!
