Pitchfork gave these guys a 4.5....but I am not that smart and actually sort of enjoyed the album. Here's my review from May Harp.Black Rebel Motorcycle ClubBaby 81RCASince their striking 2001 debut, BRMC has struggled with label problems, lifestyle issues and customs regulations, and oscillated between midnight Jesus & Mary Chain drones and roots-bluesy, Zeppelin-esque Howls. Now, with the third full-length, named after an infant who survived the tsunami to be claimed by nine different families, the trio pulls all the threads of its existence together and adds touches of Beatles pop and mid-1980s anthemry. Not all of it works equally well: “All You Do Is Talk” sounds like water-y U2 and “Not What You Wanted” could be a Minus 5 outtake. Still, at its black-hearted best, BRMC can crank out riffs that blot the sky. Cuts such as “Took Out A Loan” and the epic “American X” are as mesmerizing as anything this band has ever done, and “Weapon of Choice” at last finds the link between Howl’s blues dirge and the hedonistic churn and groan of BRMC.By Jennifer Kelly First printed in May 2007
