WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Two more albums I really like

Here are a couple more records that I probably won't get to write about in any formal setting, but that I like very much. The new album from Paula Frazer & Tarnation Now It's Time is out on Birdman Records February 27th. It's flat-out gorgeous, partly due to Frazer's extraordinary voice. She's got this incredible high pure tone, almost spooky at the top end, but also a warmth in the middle and lower ranges. There's a little bit of country vibrato in there. She's definitely got some rootsy roots, if you know what I mean. Still she also likes Ennio Morricone a lot, so it's more layered and orchestral than a lot of trad rock. It seems that, with female singers, I always get caught up in what the voice sounds like...but Frazer is also a very skilled and interesting songwriter. There are multiple streams at Paula's MySpace here:http://www.myspace.com/paulafrazerAlso, I interviewed her for Neumu about her last album:http://www.neumu.net/datastream/2005/2005-00023/2005-00023_datastream.shtmlThe other one is P.G. Six's Slightly Sorry, out now on Drag City Records. P.G. Six was in Tower Recordings, a NYC-based free-folk-jazz-ethno outfit that also spawned MV + EE Medicine Show and Bummer Road. He's influenced by all that psyche-folk experimental stuff: Incredible String Band, Bert Jansch, Sandy Bull, etc., and the results are quite lovely. Drag City doesn't have any MP3s up, but his earlier label, Amish Records does: http://www.amishrecords.com/mp3audio/3_Bray_Harp.mp3 And also, multiple tracks stream at his MySpace:http://www.myspace.com/pgsixband

  1. doombilly says I really like the Paula Frazer bits on that The Czars CD (Before... But Longer). I'd forgotten about Paula's main gig. Thanks.
