Vetiver interview

Posted over 3 years ago
Vetiver is this amazing Cali-folk-pop outfit out of SF, closely -- maybe a little too closely for their own good -- associated with Devendra Banhart. Not that I have anything against Devendra...he's brilliant, incredibly good at spotting talent and very, very generous about promoting the artists he believes in. Still, that sort of sponsorship only goes so far and then you have to prove you've got the goods. Good as the Vetiver self-titled was -- and if you haven't heard it, definitely it's worth checking out -- this year's To Find Me Gone is even better. I interviewed Andy for PopMatters a couple of months ago, and they just put the article up on the site. Here's a link if you're interested. http://www.popmatters.com/music/interviews/vetiver-060713.shtmlThere are some videos embedded in it, which is why I'm not just swiping it and putting it here. But really, words are words...what you want to check out is the music.

  2. Wanbli says ahhh...love Vetiver. The first album has tracks featuring Devendra Banhart, Hope Sandoval and Joanna Newsom - it was played non-stop in our house for a few months. Really looking forward to this new release. Thanks for the info!

  4. eshep says love the vetiver. half of the current touring band played in my wedding reception band (i constructed a sort of indie-supergroup covers band for my wedding). and andy, the vocalist/songwriter, used to be in a more indie-rock type band (a la archers of loaf, pavement, etc.) called the raymond brake, in greensboro, where my old band was based. i put out one of their early singles on a now defunct label called d-tox before they signed with simple machines. it's interesting to have seen all of these guys back when they were 18 and stuff, and to have watched them grow as artists and find their voice over so many years. equally as odd to open up the sunday new york times about a month ago and see their pictures above the fold on the front of the arts section. and yea, devendra has been a huge influence on andy (and vice versa, i would think). they have been friends for many years, and i believe they lived together for a while (if they don't now) in sf.
