Posted over 3 years ago
Rolling Stone's got their best-of up now. Dylan won, but WATCH that next step, it's a doozy....and John Mayer? How depressing. http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/12800635/the_top_50_albums_of_2006

  2. s69johnson says Where is Thom Yorke on that list? I'm ova Dylan, sorry to be a hater, but I can't stand the sound of his voice. I've discussed it in my mog blog before. He's an incredible song writer, but the voice is an acquired taste. John Mayer. Please. Rolling Stone has been so out of touch with the music community for so many years. What a lame joke.

  3. jenny says I bought the *last* Dylan album(Love & Theft) because it did so well on all those year-end lists and, big surprise, it bored the hell of of me. I may do that again if I see it used for cheap...but with fairly low expectations. I thought the RS list was pretty terrible, actually. I think Sonic Youth is the only thing we agree on.

  5. kb says i love some of it, you hate most of it. thank goodness for mog : ) what is your top ten?

  6. jenny says No, it's okay...donkey balls is pretty mild, actually. I respect the fact that lots of people love Dylan. He just doesn't do anything for me. See, I have no problem that Dylan's at the top of that list, since it obviously reflects some sort of monolithic consensus. I don't even expect RS to look outside of the top 40 for *good* records, just to avoid the really bad ones (Mayer) that get cocained and cash bagged to the top. I used to love Rolling Stone when I was a kid. It's a shame what's happened to them.

  7. ennuikiller says My take on Dylan is that if people leave him out, they have to be willing to back up the omission...it alot easier to put him in, say a few praises about it, and be done with it, instead of risking a whole bunch of backlash.......at least waits, yorke, the racontuers, and yyys showed up............

  8. DerekSunshine says Wait, you mean the "Rolling Stone" that's in the song by Shel Silverstein? It's still in circulation? How quaint. It's nice they've tried to keep up with the times by having a website and everything just like the "Farmer's Almanac":http://www.almanac.com/ does.

  9. inspectortreviranus says Jenny, you rock. Yours is the center of my MOG universe. And... I agree. The RS list seriously bit the big one. There is absolutely no reason Mr. Dylan deserves No. 1. C'mon RS, how about supporting America's NEW great music?

  10. jenny says Jack, yeah, I know, I know...just reliving the days when I'd have to sneak off on the bus and go to the smoke shop downtown to buy Rolling Stone. They didn't sell it at supermarkets in the 1970s. Thanks, RS, for getting me into MC5 and the Clash and Fleetwood Mac and, ahem, The Steve Miller Band. Those were the days. And also, what's on Farmer's Almanac's best-of list? Dylan again, probably. And yes, Inspectortreviranus, I'm with you. Best of 2006 should be about new music, new bands...never mind the merits of recommending Dylan, it's so expected. Who doesn't know about that record already? BTW, I saw it for $12 at the local record shop, but I think it may come down a little.

  11. andrew lau says My number one fetish is collecting old issues of RS. In the beginning, I figured the 60's/early 70's issues were going to be the tits, but aside form the Hunter S. Thompson articles, they're actually a little boring. After years of collecting, I've discovered it's the ten year stretch between 1974 - 1984 that takes it. Now...where am I gonna put all of these damn things?
