Retribution Gospel Choir

Posted about 1 year ago
My review of Alan Sparhawk's new project ran today at Dusted...and it went sort of like this.Retribution Gospel ChoirRetribution Gospel ChoirCaldo VerdeFrom its earliest days, Low has amassed comparison after comparison to Neil Young. If you look around the web, it is not hard to find live covers, most recently a version of "Down By the River" recorded in Melbourne this January. Yet, it’s normally been Young’s delicate, folky acoustic work that has come to mind when people consider the music of Alan Sparhawk. Now, with the louder, fuzzier, more urgent and distorted Gospel Retribution Choir, Sparhawk again sounds like Neil Young, but this time the Neil of “Cortez the Killer.” More here: http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/4169

  1. tjayfowler says I'm a long time Low fan and have seriously enjoyed their trajectory from home-town, Vernon Yard favorites, to Sub Pop genre tweaking. Their live shows have gone from audience-shushing-to-hear-the-songs to full-scale rocker shows. I saw them o the "breakdown" tour (the one right before Alan "took a break") which involved a seriously elongated acoustic guitar noise/feedback session on-and-between songs. RGC sounds like a tear in the fabric of Alan Sparhawk -- in a good way. Thanks for the partial and pointer to the full review.

  2. jenny says Yeah, I've never seen them live, so maybe it's just an extension of what they do on stage...but you've got to admit, really different from "Drums and Guns" or "Things We Lost in the Fire".

  3. tjayfowler says Yeah, totally agree. Goes to show you that great song writing defies any sonic pigeon-holing.

  4. runobodyii says But in keeping with some of the tracks on Trust which from what I've been able to gather came as a bit of a disappointment, though I am loving it. The Neil Young analogy is spot on and makes sense of my contemporaneous embrace of both bands after years of having my teeth set on edge by Young. Maybe Low broke a path in my ear for Young.
