Last year, my #4 record was Rites of Uncovering by Arbouretum, a band that can be more or less equated with David Heumann…he sings, plays guitar and writes all the songs. It’s a wonderful album, mysterious and passionate and evoking all kinds of great artists, from Jim Morrison to Jimi Hendrix to Will Oldham, without sounding exactly like anyone. Now Heumann is back with another musical project, a collaboration with Lungfish bass player Nathan Bell. The band’s name is a play on their respective surnames. It’s called Human Bell.Human Bell’s first record, out in late January on Thrill Jockey, is, unlike Arbouretum, entirely instrumental. Both Heumann and Bell play guitar on the record, and you can hear elements of rock, folk and blues…though it would be hard to find a slot that would contain everything. It’s not the kind of record that jumps out of the box at you…you might have to listen a few times, but it’s worth it. Here’s the second track, called “Splendor and Concealment,†a phrase which, I think, almost perfectly sums up the quiet gorgeousness of this album.
