WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Another Sunday cover

Posted over 2 years ago
I just bought Robert Wyatt's Solar Flares Burn for You, because i really, really liked Comicopera, even if he's only doing print interviews and is much too busy and important for online writers (unless your zine is something that rhymes with bitch-dork, apparently). Anyway, no hard feelings, not really, so when I saw this one at the record store I picked it up. And this cover of the Monkees "I'm a Believer" made me laugh out loud. It's the perfect juxtaposition of high and low and, well, just sort of perfect in general.

  1. Mike the Knife says I've loved this cover since it was released back in the day. Wyatt's collaborations with guitarist Phil Manzanera, such as the track "Frontera," are pretty damned cool, too.

Talk about a different take on a classic song. Pretty cool.

  3. jenny says Isn't it fun? And sort of heartbreaking at the same time?

  4. Mike the Knife says The heartbreaking component is even stronger when you consider Wyatt's life story - in particular, the fact that the ex-Soft Machine percussiont/singer is a paraplegic as the result of a fall from a window in June 1973.

Definately a bit of both. You hit the nail on the head. A performance that reaches where others don't.

  8. goodmusiconly says I didn't think it had a particularly comical feel until about the 2:15 mark when I busted out laughing ... it's quite definitely a mix of the two. Good call Jenny, thanks.
