Chicha Libre is a Brooklyn-based band dedicated to the somewhat esoteric artform of Peruvian cumbia music...I thought i was going way out on a limb with this but, damn, Jon Pareles just put The Roots of Chicha (curated by the people in this band), in his Sunday Times list. Anyway, here's a really fun cover of the 1970s song "Popcorn" in chicha style. Enjoy.

  2. jenny says You're welcome. It's a really fun album. I don't think they're actually selling it...it's just a demo so far, with a more finished product coming out next year.

  3. jenny says Thanks for the background, Emit. That's what's so fun about MOG. No matter how offbeat you think you're being, someone will be right there with you (or in this case, way ahead of you).

  4. Mike the Knife says Mmmmm. "Popcorn." Delicious version. Brings to mind Senor Coconut's very cool, Latin-trad covers of Kraftwerk's material.

  5. dachmo says I didn't expect to like this as much as I have. The Senor Cocoanut stuff is fun as well.

  6. jenny says This absolutely proves that you never, ever know what's going to get people going here...I figured the track would just sit here for six months with two plays on it. (The gimme plus me testing it once.)

  7. ivylander says This is great stuff. Chicha doesn't seem to have a lot of variety in its chord changes or melody lines, so covers are a good idea. Extends the franchise, as it were....

  8. fistula spume says Cool and informative. I love the cover version. I do an awesome version of this song with tongue clicking. Great stuff jenny.

  9. jenny says I really want to hear that tongue-clicking version...any chance of an upload? I'm doing a piece on Chicha Libre at some point. I've got an interview on tape, just have to write the thing. Also, I didn't write it but there's a good review of The Roots of Chicha up at Dusted today, too, if anyone's interested: http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/3920

  10. fistula spume says Maybe one day I will record it. My tongue gets tired towards the end. The hard part is the high notes at the break where there's no corn popping. That Roots of Chica looks good. I think I have some of that on a two disc 60's Peruvian psyche comp I got. BTW I got your cd in the mail today so expect something fun this week.
