WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Sea Wolf's rustic indie vibe

Posted over 2 years ago
This guy Sea Wolf (or Alex Brown Church) is on the road now, and I think you're going to hear more about him. His sound is balanced tipsily between indie pop and Americana, happy on the surface but shadowy underneath (just like all quality pop is, IMO). Here's what I wrote about his Philly show. The rest of the dates follow:Sea WolfSat., Nov. 3, 9pm. $10. With Mark Mulcahy + Hong Kong Stingray. North Star, 27th and Poplar sts. 215.787.0488.www.northstarrocks.com Breezy on the surface, but laced with ominous images and funereal Americana flourishes, Alex Brown Church’s Sea Wolf have been getting some traction lately among folk-tolerant indie rock fans. The California native’s new album Get to the River Before It Runs Too Low has a prevailing mood of mournful giddiness. It’s a ghostly, melancholic world he inhabits, and yet his songs kick up their heels to the reel of fiddle, guitar and cello. And maybe it’s to forestall the inevitable lupine-named band comparisons that Church calls his first single “You’re a Wolf.” (J.K.) 5. jenny says Thanks for putting the sound up. I wish I could do that, but you're screwed with dial-up and I haven't had time to go the cafe this week. It's a good song, though, isn't it?

  6. goodmusiconly says _"happy on the surface but shadowy underneath (just like all quality pop is, IMO )."_ ... aptly described, and I'm on the same page as you with that sentiment. I've been enjoying the "Get to the River..." EP but have neglected to give the full-length album a proper listen ... another one to add to the list.
