Young Marble Giants...everything they've ever done on three discs

Posted over 2 years ago
Young Marble Giants had an instantly recognizable sound...the flicker and thwack of muted drum machine beats (no drummer), twitchy, trebly guitar, bass and the ice-pure, uninflected voice of Allison Statton. There's a fantastic reissue out now of substantially everything that the era's quietest post-punkers ever produced, their only full length Colossal Youth, twenty-six singles and b-sides and five Peel Sessions. It's been out on Domino since September 11, and it includes some really excellent liner notes by Simon Reynolds. Here are some videos:And the reunion show from this May

  1. cuddlefish says Colossal Youth is an album that I thoroughly enjoy listening to. Haven't heard any of their Peel Sessions. Must. Track. Down.

  2. fistula spume says I love YMG. Thanks for posting the vids. Had no idea they were out there. Is it post punk or pre twee? Just kidding. I saw the new release of Collosal Youth was coming out I think a couple of weeks ago. I'm debating on getting it. I bought the ablum about 6 years ago and paid a pretty penny for it. I want to read the liner notes but I wonder how good the extra tracks are.

  3. jenny says Well, I was trying to post an mp3 of "Posed by Models" from one of the Peel sessions, but no luck at all...sorry. I don't really know if this is a must-have for people who already own Colossal Youth. There are 15 singles and b-sides that are not on CY, that's disc two. It's 26 tracks total, but 11 are alternate versions. The Peel session tracks are: Searching for Mr. Right Brand - New - Life Final Day N.I.T.A. Posed by Models The liner notes are really quite good, too. And, obviously, if you don't have Colossal Youth, it's a fantastic point of entry.

  5. jenny says I don't think you can buy the original LP anymore by itself, except through Ebay, but the box set is pretty excellent.

  6. fistula spume says I had to get mine through some record store in Pennsylvania that was ordering it through some distributor in England. It took about two months to get but was well worth it. I was worried that this new release might be a bunch of alternate versions. It just might be worth it for 15 new tracks and the booklet.
