Another Sunday, another cover

Posted over 2 years ago
Here's my new hero Michael Hurley covering Blind Willie McTell's "Dying Crapshooter Blues."If you're not familiar with Hurley one thing you should know is that Christgau called his 1976 album Have Moicy the greatest folk album of the rock age.I've reviewed his new album Ancestral Swamp for PopMatters, but it hasn't quite run yet. More later. He's touring pretty soon, too -- Hurley not McTell who is probably dead -- so go see him. Dates here: http://www.snockonews.net/shows.htm

  1. 1234chainsaw says That McTell original is so incredibly potent that this cover, though pretty good, just can't compare. Looking forward to your album review.

  3. jenny says Pekka, you should check out this album if you like folk and blues. It's very, very good. And if it's not as good as Blind WIllie McTell, okay, that's a pretty tough standard. And apparently I'm making clever allusions with my subconscious again...no idea about the Only Ones.

  4. 1234chainsaw says ("Another Girl, Another Planet") I like old acoustic Delta blues, very much. I'll take your word and look into the Hurley thing. Thanks.

  5. jenny says What's cool about the Hurley record is how effortless it seems...i think that's what happens when you've been making albums for 40-plus years, you just breathe and it's music.

he was down my way but i missed him, alas...loved "robbin' banks'' on have moicy - there was a follow up song about jesus on their next album which was great but memory fails. "take these stones out of my hand/lead me away to the promised land/all your sins are forgiven/take me down...''
