Okkervil/Jurado show review

Published first at Harp Online (http://www.harpmagazine.com)Okkervil River and Damien Jurado Live in NorthamptonPearl StreetNorthampton, MA USASeptember 26, 2007by Jennifer Kelly Okkervil River, the Austin-based band fronted by Will Sheff, switched things up dramatically with this year’s The Stage Names, splicing big beats and a pop exuberance into their hyper literate, hyper sensitive sound. Anyone coming to their live show expecting the gentle, emotionally fragile meditations of Golden River will be blown several rows back – but that will just make room for the hordes of college students pushing up through the ranks. This is a very rock, very exuberant show… even older songs like “Stone” take on larger, more emphatic dimensions here… and the best of the new songs, “Our Life Is Not a Movie or Maybe” is split right in half by an extended bout of feedback. Damien Jurado, looking up from a set too subtle for the space, at one point comments, “You’ll like Okkervil River. They all wear suits and jump around a lot… and they’re handsome guys.” Everything I’m not, he might as well say, and however much I love Jurado, you can’t help noticing the contrast. Okkervil River puts on a party, not a sensitivity-raising session, with homespun leaps off drum stands and acoustic Townsend windmills and handclaps and indiscriminant use of tambourine. 4. jenny says Oh, thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Blair's the best isn't he? But do go see them if you get a chance. I was a little fency about this album (enjoyable, yes, but great?) until I went to the show...which knocked it up into the bottom of my top ten.
