Club 8 "The Boy Who Couldn't Stop Dreaming

Posted over 2 years ago
I haven't been writing much lately, but I've been listening to a whole pile of promos. This one, I put on this morning, and it's an almost perfect, morning kind of record...soft delicate pop from Sweden, which will probably remind you a little bit of Camera Obscura. Here's "Heaven"...isn't it just?More on the band and their new album here:http://www.labrador.se/releases/club8.php3

  1. Dale says More goodness from Labrador Records. There must be a spring somewhere that allows them to continue to release such excellent fare.

  2. jenny says Hey, Dale glad you like it. I wasn't familiar with Labrador...what else have they done that's worth checking out?

  3. Dale says Fistula and I can go on for hours about the genius of Labrador ... He's really enjoyed Sambassadeur and Suburban Kids With Biblical Names. I've liked The Radio Dept., The Mary Onettes, and The Legends. And if you're feeling particularly adventurous, they have a band called [ingenting] that sings in Swedish. I can't understand a word they sing, but it sounds good.

  4. jenny says Oh cool...I like records in foreign languages. I can make up my own story. I'd be worried about how ignorant I am if I weren't always learning things.

  5. Dale says Meh; ignorance is when you stop learning. :)

  6. matthewStaton says the legends, partiqularly "up against the legends" and radio dept "lesser matters" are both really top notch and well worth checking out.

  7. dachmo says "Club 8" are one half of "Acid House Kings" and I love em both.

  8. jenny says Oh, interesting, I had an Acid House Kings CD for review once, I think. Very clever, soft pop, right? It's not my natural center, but well done. This is what happens when I post a song without doing the research. (Other people do it for me, not so bad, really.)

  9. juepucta says I love that label - lots of downloads on their site and their 4 discs anniversary comp can be found, with their endorsement, on torrent sites. I agree with the above posters. My faves are the Legends (especially the first album), the Mary Onettes, Club 8, Radio Dept and Ingenting. As for singing in foreign languages, heh, only Ingenting sings in Swedish. All the other bands go for English. They have this great/sweet/weird incestuous thing going on where bands share members - or like somebody mentioned above, some bands are a duo made up of half another band and that type of stuff. One last thing, if you feel like it, order directly from them. They are fast, not more expensive than buying the domestic release (sometimes even cheaper), you get them on the Swedish release date and often times you get extra tracks or even bonus discs/DVDs. -G.

  10. Mike the Knife says Gorgeous. But seriously, could Stockholm be the new Liverpool/Seattle/Montreal? This is getting crazy! I mean, Sweden rocks!

  11. juepucta says It's the whole of Scandinavia i think. At least on a per capita basis. Sweden leads, but in the last 7 yrs or so, i've gotten heavily into bands from Denmark as well to give you an example. And none are the stereotypical death metal or shitty-pop of yesteryear. Their governments help lots as well. I think it explains why Canada (Toronto, Montreal and to a lesser extent Vancouver - the joke has alwayas been that Soviet Canuckistan is almost Scandinavian anyway) are going through such a great musical moment as well. A mix of governmet help, demographics, lack of mainstream media/labels "developing" biz, a supportive audience - and of course the net. Wihtout the net it wouldn't be as easy for all of us to listen to music from the other side of the globe. Sweden baby, that's where it's at. :) -G.
