Blair's 1990s radio show

Posted over 2 years ago
So, I read Blair's post about Sirius' fixation with grunge and Oasis in their 1990s radio station...and am answering his call for a more diverse playlist. I missed a lot of the 1990s, musically speaking, because I had my son in 1995 and then spent a whole year listening to nothing but opera. (It was some sort of hormone surge, I think, though I still like to pull out the Wagner once in a while.) I came back in around 1997-1997, when Elephant Six was in full swing and SLeater-Kinney was reaching their peak and garage rock (which didn't even have a name yet) was just barely getting going. The internet was just beginning to be relevant as a way to find music -- actually Michael Goldberg's Addicted to Noise was a huge factor in my discovering new music, as was a college DJ who took pity on me and saved whatever weird and interesting stuff that managed to get turned in for credit in Keene NH's Turn It Up. And somehow, I found the Bellrays, the punk-soul antidote to what had become a very white bread world. (I spent pretty much every Friday hanging at the playground with my son and all the moms...none of whom had very interesting musical taste.) I'm not saying I'd trade it...actually, I'd give up a lot to be able to carry my little boy on my shoulders again one more time, with his hands in my hair. But you know, life goes on, and music is always there when you need it.So here's the Bellrays at their red-hottest, back in 1998, on Let It Blast...the track's called "Kill the Messenger" and I'll bet you $100 it'll never ever play on corporate radio.Oh crap, MOG Player's not letting me upload again...have to try later.

  1. White and Nerdy says The BellRays! An increadible band that has been somewhat overlooked due to the obsession with the grunge/Oasis radio that you mentioned. I think the big-money-white-shirts are way too fixated on making the people fit the market, rather than the other way around. If any of these companies had ANY sense (I know, I just said the "S" word) at all they'd realize that moms want to listen to bands like the BellRays. Just because you have kids and/or are over 25 years old doesn't meant you can't rock and you no longer support music. Jenny, I've hope you've had time to see the BellRays live. I've yet to see them give a bad live perfromance.

  2. jenny says Oh, yeah, totally agree. I haven't seen them live. I hope that happens someday. I didn't know this had gone up. Maybe I should try to put that MP3 on the player now.

  3. contrabandwidth says Good stuff! They remind me a little of The MC5 and Blue Cheer. If you like this stuff, check out The Woggles. Their an Atlanta band that is actually pretty popular (maybe not in an Arctic Monkeys way) over in the rest of the world, but they have that kind of garagey/Nuggets raw rock n' soul sound. And their great fun in concert too! Thanks for exposing me, and I really like it, but your probably right, corporate radio will never play 'em!

  4. jenny says I love the Woggles. I interviewed Manfred one time for Splendid, what a fun band! I believe that Lisa Kekaula was involved in that sort of MC5 reunion tour a couple of years back...they're definitely on the same wavelength.

  5. contrabandwidth says My friends were in a band with Buffy from the Subsonics (Tiger Tiger), who is married to guitarist of the Woggles(I forget his name, but I've never met him either). I think they are one of the best party bands ever. Atlanta (and Athens too - The Whiggs come to mind) has a lot of great Garage influenced bands, it's just not the sound du jour for most of the country, though.

  7. Pseudo Cyborg says I SO did not get the memo on the BellRays. Thanks for bringing them to my attention!

  8. jenny says I don't think there was a memo, more's the pity. But glad you found them. They're so good.
