I had been cleaning out my room...

... when I discovered my old music collection from college: CDs, mixed tapes, anthologies, etc. After a quick runthrough of what I considered "music" a few years back, I came to the conclusion that, in college, I listened to a lot of funk, jazz, and neo-soul. Nowadays, I listen to a lot of alternative from the UK. (Therefore, rendering it "indie.") Back in elementary and high school, I listened to alternative from both local and American acts. In other words, generally speaking, I've always enjoyed alternative music. So what gave in college?I told a friend about this, and he said that he had gone through a similar, well, "detour." Hmmm...Then, we both realized that, in college, we had been very open to any kind of good music; that is, music we did not necessarily prefer to listen to, but good music nonetheless. Doing so not only allowed us to learn more about music in general, it also led us to be more confident in what suited our particular musical tastes.(Insert thoughtful look with slight nodding here.)
