The Who Rock Honors

Posted about 1 year ago

9:23 PM (PST)

I'm watching The Who Rock Honors on VH1 now; it's about 20 minutes in and Incubus just covered "I Can See For Miles" and "I Can't Explain". Now I understand the whole premise of this concert and whatever, but there are definietly certain bands that shouldn't cover certain other bands. Incubus is one of them. to start, brandon boyd's vocals are already sub par, but jose antonio could barely keep up on drums with the rest of the band...oh well there's still another hour and a half left.

9:31 PM

Flaming Lips are doing a medley from "Tommy". Again it's the vocals that are suffering. I'm not sure if Wayne Coyne is sick or not, but he sounds terrible. the band is ok though. Rainn Wilson's introduction however was fantastic...hopefully that will be on youtube soon enough.

9:41 PM

Jack Black is disturbingly perfect for "Squeeze Box". It's probably just because "Squeeze Box" is almost like a toned down version of "Kielbasa" or any other Tenacious D song for that matter...it's all just dirty folk songs Either way, Tenacious D + Squeeze Box = very good.

9:42 PM

Conan O'brien just admitted to loosing his virginity while listening to The Who. now that's a mental picture i'm never getting out of my head.

9:57 PM

Pearl Jam have always been fairly vocal about their appreciation for The Who...or at least Eddie Veder has. on the Live At Royal Hall album from 2003, Vedder did a pretty good job singing "I'm One". anyway, Pearl Jam just did 2 songs from Quadraphenia, "Love Reign O'er Me" and "The Real Me", both of which were really good. bassist Jeff Ament and drummer Matt Cameron both kept up incredibly well, which is always a good sign.

10:12 PM

The Who are finally performing. Opened with "Baba O'Riley" (what else), followed by "Who Are You", "Behind Blue Eyes" and now they're in the middle of "My Generation". overall it's been pretty good. unfortunately, age has definetly taken it's toll on Townshend. he's got this weird issue with his hand (due to drugs most likely) so he's been a little off his mark, but as of now he's playing the hell out of "My Generation". on the other hand, Daltrey's been fairly solid. he sounds like he's loosing his voice a bit, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.

10:31 PM

Well i suppose all mediocre things must come to an end. a night of covers and 2 old men trying their best to be 23 again is pretty entertaining though. still, The Who will always be great, and while they're certainly not the band they were 35 years ago, it could definitely be a lot worse. but considering how Pete and Roger turned out, it was overall pretty damn good.

there's always the good old days though.

i saw an ad for this and when they mentioned incubus was paying tribute to the who by way of covering them...i nearly got sick. i used to like incubus, would probably still enjoy hearing them if i ever put them on again, but the thought of having to hear them struggle through a song by the who...why them? makes me awfully queasy.

You are dead on with this. I myself was wondering about the vocals when The Flaming Lips did their set. Roger and Pete can still rock just a little less violently and in another tone (did you hear 'Who Are You', yikes!). Oh well, all good things must definitely come to an end (or all things must pass - G. Harrison) and I for one would be happy if they decided to retire, this time for keeps. I don't want to see Daltrey or Townsend touring Vegas as solo acts trying to keep the Who tunes out there. Let's just remember them in their early '70's prime and move on.

Missed this, but it's repeating in HD on Friday evening, so I'll be watching it this weekend.
