mashups

so i got to amoeba music today and ended up getting DJ Axel's 2007 mashup record "Breakin' The Law". needless to say it's pretty awesome. some of my favorite mashups now are "Guns 'n' Hovas" which is several Jay-Z songs over "Paradise City" and "Snooperstitious" which is Snoop Dogg over Stevie Wonders "Superstition". Also, the album cover is fantastic.

i'm not entirely sure why i'm so fascinated with mashups lately, but it probably has to do with the fact that a.) i have a short attention span (this is more for Girl Talk, which changes every 30 seconds or so) and b.) its almost like the final frontier of pop music. when you can combine artists/songs you'd never see put together (i.e. Girl Talk's "No Pause", which has Eminem's "Shake That" over Yael Naim's "New Soul") really shows the limits music can be pushed to...or something like that.
or maybe it's just really ironic in some weird sort way...

I love the cover. So wait, what was the deal with that whole "Grey Album" thing with Jay-Z? That was a mashup right?

the grey album is something different. that was Danger Mouse (from Gnarls Barkley) who made a mash up album of Jay-Z's "Black Album" and The Beatles "White Album"...it's also very good.
ah. I'll check it out. thanks!
on the grey album what dangermouse did with "piggies" and jay really tripped me out.
this is a good mash and a clever title too.
