Beck's "Gamma Ray" was rockin' my world recently. And I was in this cafe and the Smashing Pumpkins "1979" started playing and it was like I was hypnotized, that song just grabbed me again. Awesome song.

If we're talking new music, for me it's Death Cab for Cutie: I will Possess Your Heart. Already posted about it here:

One i keep going back to - it's from 1979 - is Fairport Convention's instrumental Orange Blossom Special...

In Emma Bull's fantasy novel. FInder, which takes place in Bordertown, a place where the Real World and the land of Faerie meet, where punk elves ride motorcycles and a rock band is also a motorcycle gang is also a magical morris side that protects Bordertown from evil influences, one character hears a punk/folk band called County Hell Fairgrounds on the music in the restaurant where he's eating...

He says "The bass player grabbed a handful of strings and began to climb the alphabet.  'How can he make his hands do that?' I asked."

His elven friend, Tick Tick, the best motorcycle mechanic in town, doesn't even look up from her food as she says "Too much Fairport Convention as a child."

I've often wondered if perhaps this track was at least part of what Emma meant - listen to Peggy's bass behind Swarb's incredible fiddle.

Mog guy Robin Danar's version of "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" has been rocking my world super big-time. Made with Jason Coryell playing about half a symphony's worth of instruments and a singing a big choir of vocal tracks, it sounds like Quincy Jones doing tropicalia as produced by Brian Wilson. Perfect for summer.
