Beirut in Paris: Zach Condon on the loose in France

Posted about 1 year ago
Beirut, the pet project of 22 year old Zach Condon, has taken over my life. Again. For the third time. It's got to be the dusty Balkan gypsy horns and the lilting, percussive strumming of the mandolin. It transports me to another age; sometimes it's a sleepy smoky village in the south of France, other times it's a brasserie in Brooklyn. It's transcendence at its least and transformance at its best.I wake up in the morning and I'm humming "Postcards From Italy". I eat my breakfast tapping the beat of "Nantes". I nod off at night, dreaming of "Elephant Gun". And whatever I do, I haven't been able to escape the musical throes of either 2006's Gulag Orkestar or 2007's The Flying Club Cup (nor do I care to).Zach Condon and his 12 piece collective recently paid a visit to Studio 104 at the Maison do Radio in Paris and recorded a Black Session for French radio station France Inter. It was broadcast on November 26th, 2007you can download it from me here:Beirut - Black Session (redirect to Mtply)or sample a few tracks, including Jeff Buckley's "Halellujah"Beirut - Black Session - Hallelujah.mp3Beirut - Black Session - Elephant Gun.mp3As always... please support the artists!!Beirut's homepageBeirut on Myspaceamazon.comemusic.com

  3. dachmo says If by older you mean their first album which came out in 2006 then I would say go get it, now. It is very good and was considered by many to be one of the better albums of 2006.

  5. jameson says definitely BUY the Gulag Orkestar and Flying Club Cup. Both are highly recommended. Also the Lon Gisland ep is stunning. But check out what you can of Beirut's music here on Mog so you can make an informed decision. (Mr Hyman, you can just mail me that endorsement check, thanks!)
