THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

music collectors

i think most of us are music collectors and i guess the most of you are into the business for years and you are as the mog slogan says on a permanent discovery, too!but i wonder what it is for? as i'm definetly bored here in my office i just took a look at my i-tunes account and skipped through it. and i thought that i maybe should start doing my own list for 2006, but i refused. the reason is maybe one third of my collection is ripped or bought as download and a lot of stuff is still on vinyl waiting for its digitalization.so what i want to say is, that i worry to enter a level on which i loose any sort of overview what great stuff i have and do not listen to. it is maybe compareable with those folks who download tones of music, videos and so on from p2p but never have the chance to listen to or watch the stuff they downloaded. they just do it for having it!so i sometimes remember my school days where i maybe just bought 1 or to cds/records in a month but had lots of time to listen to. i had a closer connection to the stuff i listened to then nowadays. nowadays many albums are tuned in just once or maybe twice because there is not the time to give them time to catch me while in the past i had the chance to. actually the place i'm listen to music is in my car on my way to the office and back home. so i do not have a real chance to get into it. so i wonder where and how it will end with me? or what will be the future of music listening, maybe we have implemented chips in our heads that give you stereo music (=listening and feeling) or just listening/feeling.i really wonder! and so i do not think to have a top list 2006. i just can say that the last record of the go-betweens entered the level of probably one of my all-time favourites and maybe some german music i recommended earlier here

  1. lemontwist says Heh, I know how you feel. :) For me, I acquire new stuff and listen to it one or two times on my laptop to make sure that I really like it. If I like it enough, it goes into iTunes on my main computer where it gets piped through my nice stereo. That's what I listen to most of the time. I feel like I always have a back log of music to listen to, which is at times a blessing and a curse. And sometimes I think "why the hell am I doing this?" And at those times, I think back to six months ago when I was just starting here at MOG and my music collection was stale and I was bored with it, and didn't feel like I was discovering anything new. It's always worth it, to listen to new stuff, and keep acquiring new stuff, if there's the possibility to hear music or discover a band that will change your life in some way.

  2. Violet Grey says I look to music to guide me through my growth as a person and as an artist. I don't (with the rare exception) take anything into my musical life that I don't feel is going to push me into a new place or inspire me in some way. That's one of the reasons I like the net so much; I get to listen to thing before hand and then determine if I want to make it a part of my life. If I don't get on board with something right away, I can always come back to it later and give it another shot without having to invest any more than a couple of minutes of time into it. I never feel like I'm behind because I can sample things in little doses. And then you MOGgers are always filling my ears and eyes with new stuff to taste, so I never feel like I'm out of the loop. I may not be the cheeriest son of a bitch when it comes to new music and the trends that pop up, but I'm always willing to try something at least once. Except Yanni. Fuck him.

  4. jackrabbit says yes somehow you are right, i mean you have some sort of catalyser that's true. i think most people do have one, maybe mog, the net, a second pc-drive, the record store around the block or friends recommending music etc. i guess i do have that, too. but the point is even if you have catalysed some stuff there is so many good music left that it seems hardly possible to give those extracts of your collection that much attention it has deserved so i wondered what happens if you arrive at that point, what do you do. of course none of us will stop buying music, so there has to be a different step to take. and i guess there are just 2 exit scenarios left: one- take one day a week or one week a month on which you put on the shuffle function or two- just go ahead and collect the music as you did before and maybe comparable to someone who collects fine wine. maybe -maybe not! - you return to the old stuff you have and take a little dip of that sweet fruit or you just snoop a little bit and then decide to listen to or not. uuhhh, maybe it is just as it is
