WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

James Davis of the Dixie Hummingbirds R.I.P.

Posted over 2 years ago
The 90-year-old leader of this crucial gospel group has died in Philadelphia. Davis was the driving force behind the group since its formation in 1928. Probably best known to modern audiences for lifting up Paul Simon's "Love Me Like A Rock," the Hummingbirds (according to the New York Times) decided to respectfully decline Simon's invitation to tour with him because they'd already committed to a number of appearances in churches - can't accuse them of hypocrisy, then.... This clip is from the Sixties, as becomes immediately obvious from the social references. Man, they had it...

  1. mousetrap says Rest in peace, Mr. Davis. Is there any doubt where he's going? As the group's disciplinarian, he was so strict that he once fined _himself_ $20 after he accidentally played a Muddy Waters song on a jukebox when he'd meant to select a religious song. Sweet post, ivylander. Always nice to hear some genuinely passionate singing. And how about those guitar licks in the background?
