SOUNDS OF FUTURE PAST AND PRESENT PERFECT

For dermahrk: Kirsty MacColl

Posted about 1 year ago

When one of the most respected of all MOGgers revealed the other day that he owned only one Kirsty MacColl CD, and seemed generally unaware of her oeuvre, I was the teensiest bit scandalized (as Dame Edna might put it). After all, this is a man whose embrace - figurative, of course - of talented women who write songs and sing them superbly is second to no one's. And of all the talented women who have written songs and sung them superbly, Kirsty MacColl is top of my list. I'd have to say hers was the rock death that made me truly sick inside.

So, which of her tracks to play as an introduction? Not easy. There isn't a single track that encapsulates her approach. One of the early power-poppy confections? (That would no doubt sit well with dermahrk...) One of the later witty excursions into the Latin-music universe, on her own very specific terms? Her sentimental side? Her acerbic side? Her crazy-lady side? Maybe the reason she never achieved the measure of fame that her talent merited was that she never settled into a single easily recognizable persona.

In the end, MOG kind of made the decision for me - the first two tracks I attempted to upload were rejected. What was ultimately accepted was one of her lesser known songs, but one that has been rattling around in my lead for the past two days, since dermahrk's admission spurred me into revisiting all the CDs of hers that I own. I'll try to get another one into comments, if for no other reason than a single offering feels incomplete....

Prepare to be scandalized yet again.  You say she's got some cds out there? This is great. I like this MOG place so much.

This is "My Affair," to my mind the most successful of her forays into Latin music. The lyrics are just blindingly smart and funny...

I love that first track. I also love "My Affair" but it happens to be on the CD I own, Electric Landlady (she's witty too!).

Musically, my eyes are bigger than my stomach. Trying to clear my digestive tract by eating less. When that diet is over, I plan to buy her box set. Think I stretched that metaphor a bit too far, although I can think of how it could've been worse. I would of course love to hear more if you're so inclined.

DM, I'm not scandalized, but a little surprised. If I'm correct about your ears, you might want to start with her CD "Kite."

Rawk, "Fairytale of New York" is absolutely a small slice of magic. Did you know that according to a BBC poll, the English named it the best Christmas song of all time?

Annie, glad to be your enabler....

Shmily, aren't your girlfriends Kirsty's backup singers? I thought not...

DMK, when we meet in several weeks....

She wrote these songs, as well as sung them with a superbly vibratoless voice?  ivyland, you made my day.  Onto my getlist she goes.
