WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

If Prince Were Brazilian....

Posted about 1 year ago
....you might get something like this. I've been pretty glued to this Max de Castro CD since someone burned it for me. I am greatly enjoying his woozy, psychotropic Brazilian funk - during a less-than-thrilling work week, it's a good place to lose oneself afterhours.De Castro is the son of Brazilian funk great Wilson Simonal, so he's got the bloodline thing down. (Which reminds me: Has anyone caught any of this ghastly new TV show that 15-year-old Miss Ivylander is enamored of called "Rock The Cradle"? In it, the sons and daughters of folks like Joe Walsh and Al B. Sure do an "American Idol," singing their hearts out for America's love and a record contract. Unimaginably, it's even lamer than AI.) Sorry, I'm back. Hope you dig this one. I'll stick another track in comments....

  2. Hermes says I'm not a big fan of Prince, so I guess I have more respect for Max. The second track reminds me actually a bit of the Spanish rockers "Heroes del Silencio", though I don't really like the latter ones - but many rockers worldwide do, as I found out in Mexico and here in the hinterland. Anyway, this is a good completion for my recent journeys into Brazilian music and covers a niche, that I didn't experience so far. This has obviously not much to do with what one usually would expect from Bazil: their own approach to (Latin) funk and soul, Bossa Nova, Batucada and those other traditional genres, that I have no idea of, AND not to forget Drum'n'Bass - Brazil is or at least was really big there.

  4. dermahrk says I've just seen a promo spot or two for it. I would think it could be worse than AI for two reasons: 1) Somehow, the one-leg-up factor given these kids due to their parents being famous rock stars has not been enough to get anyone interested 2) 50 of their genes come from the other side of the family, enhancing the tone-deaf possibilities.

  5. Spike says It's fun to hear a new combination of musical ingredients, new chord sequences, new relationships between melody and chord, all supported by an impeccable rhythm.

  7. Jonh Ingham says Man I bet Prince is listening to this guy every day. That is seriously groovin'. Once again we bow to your ineffable taste and bla bla bla (sorry - the gin just kicked in). I just checked on Amazon - Max has quite a catalogue and I think my wallet is going to be the thinner for it. Do you or your mentor have any other recommendations?

  8. ivylander says Jonh, I have been trying to reach my benefactor for about a week now, to get his answer to the same question you ask because I'm in Manhattan tomorrow and plan to make a lunchtime pilgrimage to J&R. If he doesn't reply (and it seems doubtful at this stage), I may just have to take pot luck....
