Sorry this is a day early, but checking out Dzendvokh's thrill-packed Bollywood post this morning gave me a perverse idea (not a perverted one, though I've had my fair share of those as well). It's a game based on cover versions, and it's pretty simple. As most of us know, pop songs are picked up by different cultures and repurposed in all kinds of unexpected ways - sometimes to the point of unrecognizability. (Yes, I believe it's a word.) I have a few such cover versions in my vaults, and I'm willing to wager that my breathtakingly eclectic MOG friends have a number if similar curios lurking in the corners of their music collections as well. So, to get the game started, I am posting a track from a Bollywood disco collection from several years back. The musical director is Bappi Lahiri, a guy who pretty much ruled the soundtrack world during the disco boom. This is a song from a 1981 film entitled "Armaan." I confess I haven't seen it, but it's apparently some sort of remake of "Casablanca." Which makes this song even more inexplicable. For 10 points, the question is: What is the original title of this song, and who were the original performers?

  1. Masoo says I hear hints of "Tijuana Taxi" and "If You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman," but mostly I'm at a loss.

  4. Oatmeal says If there is one thing I know, it is that there is no need to logically connect the musical interludes to any plot in most Bollywood movies. This is actually a pretty good tune.

  5. Jonh Ingham says When I lived in Tokyo our favourite Indian restaurant had a killer Bollywood version of 'Jumping Jack Flash'. I always regret I didn't get a copy of it.

  6. dermahrk says I'm afraid that most Moggers musical collections are not as culturally diverse as yours and your game will thus have few participants, but I will gladly listen to whatever is offered. What a mix! Strings, bongos, steel drums, sythesizers. Is all Bollywood music like this?

  7. Bartleby says Another treat for us mere mortal... I really love the treacly take which is perfect for this song. If you like unusual covers from around the world, there's a series of French compilations made by Béatrice Ardisson (wife of a very famous French TV presenter/producer) which specialise in such genre. It's called "Musique de Paris Dernière." Not all of them are worth a listen but the graphics are quite sightly.

  8. Bartleby says Post Scriptum: I don't think I'll be able to participate in this game as my covers are quite restrictive in their scope... Sorry about that. But I don't mind guessing.

  10. Spike says Wow is right. Compared to what little other Bollywood music I've heard, this richly varied confection sounds way less Indian. It also grabs me.
