The CDs in this post and the one to follow shortly don't have exactly the same idea, but they're close enough - and interesting enough - to bookend each other nicely.Recently came across a used copy of a album that had caught my eye for some time, called "Bombay The Hard Way: Guns Cars and Sitars." A snip at eight clams. It features the film music of two brothers from Rajasthan, Kalyanji and Anandji Shah, who composed the soundtracks for a number of masala ("mixed spice") movies in the Seventies. The story continues: A raft of tapes were unearthed after 25 years and remixed by none other than master producer Dan The Automator. At least, this is the tale the liner notes tell - the whole thing smells a bit of the put-on to me.However, the liner notes are right about at least one thing: they refer to the cuts as "some of the wildest, funkiest and least 'incidental' incidental music ever made."So return with me now to a faraway time and place, where the men have the worst 'staches ever, carry the faintest aroma of vindaloo and sport Travolta's castaway white suits - and those are the good guys....
