WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Where did Funky Friday go?

Posted about 1 year ago
Dunno about you, but tonight I am sorely in need of the funk, brothers and sisters. And nothing is scratching my itch better at the moment than one of the best "Tighten Up" ripoffs ever. (There's a post to be written someday about songs whose slavish imitators spawn entire subgenres. But for now bugger that, it's Friday night!)I submit to you the great Lee Dorsey, channeling - and, in many ways, improving upon - Archie Bell and the Drells....

  1. ivylander says Another magisterially funky Lee Dorsey track, "Do-Re-Mi" (which I remember covered as an early Dusty Springfield B-side). Cody - come back, man.....

  2. I am says Is that a plea, a plaintive wail. Do you need the funk? Do you think Stendahl would listen to funk were he alive today? Me thinks he would.

  3. Bartleby says Funkalicious with a hint of soul flavour which is the perfect recipe for a funk feast. -- Funny you should mention Stendhal and music, I was planning to make a post on this topic actually.

  5. deadmandeadman says Very nice. My bones are rattlin'.

  6. ivylander says Chris, I think Stendhal would be all the fuck the way down. He craves funk, I crave funk - the human condition screams out for funk. All great writers understand that.

  7. ivylander says Addendum: Not that I am for a moment implying that I am a great writer....

  8. I am says But I am is a great writer.

  9. Dave says Hard to top "we not only sing, but we dance just as good as we want to." LOL

  10. Mike the Knife says If Funky Friday was on life support, ivy done brought it back to life! (I think the holiday is sapping a lot of energy from people, but that's no excuse for fumbling the funk...)

  11. Spike says Mike you're right! "Four Corners" is a new ear-opener for me; I now need to upgrade my Lee Dorsey portfolio. To try to keep the funk momentum going a little longer, here's a tune by Branford Marsalis's group Buckshot LeFonque called "Some Cow Fonque (More Tea, Vicar?)." Marsalis is a Mogger under the name bran, and like other famous Moggers is a rather inactive one.

  12. dermahrk says This immediately brought to mind the Todd Rundgren track (Nazz? not sure..) "Loosen Up", which is the Bizarro world version of this song. The band starts out tight, then Todd introduces each instrument, which one by one lose the beat, lose the melody, lose the groove. It's an extended joke, but a good one.

  13. ivylander says I love the opening of that Nazz song: "Hi, we're the Nazz from Philadelphia....(unintelligible)...tuna fish hoagie!"

  14. ivylander says Spike, that Buckshot LeFonque track is a monster. Chris, it has been widely documented that great writers (such as ivylander) never refer to themselves in the third person....

  15. Dzendvokh says Nice one Ivy...... tis a new one to me.....gonna have to follow up on this. Ya know one big thing that happened to Funky Friday..... Cody ....MIA on Mog.... of course he's dropping the bombs elsewhere.

  16. ivylander says Cody's thinking about a comeback. Can't happen too soon for me...
    Permalink posted 12/29/2007
  17. I am says Yeah, Ivy I don't think that is going to happen. Cody is happy where he is. Looks like your going to have buy that "second house" if you want to stay in touch. Just Mogmail me and I'll hook you up.

  18. Oatmeal says OOH, dats tight. I am building my Dorsey collection slowly, but he seems to consistently improve on more famous versions of songs. Lonely Avenue is a recent find, he funkafies the R. Charles classic, but it is a damn iTunes protected file so no sharing. Sucks.
