WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Either two days late or five days early.....

Sorry about the hiatus. My work has been eating my life lately. Hope that this post is a first step toward a full-fledged re-engagement with MOG.I'd never heard of the Holmes Brothers until Cody (who else?) facilitated the introduction. In their blissfully under-the-radar way, they may just be the best purveyors of cover versions out there. When a song is reinvented by them, it stays reinvented. As you shall shortly hear.Don't know much about these guys (two actual brothers, Wendell on guitar and Sherman on bass, plus Popsy Dixon on drums. And everybody sings), except that they've been knocking around for 30 or 40 years, gigging here and there and always working steadily. They can do blues, gospel, country and western, soul, et al. But instead of furrowing individual grooves in each genre, they have the ability to contain all of them in a coherent and somehow inevitable sound.I think you'll be pretty amazed by what they do with "Peace, Love and Understanding." I found myself wondering why no one else had thought of treating the song this way. And two more standouts appear in the comments, including a special surprise for Deadman.

  1. ivylander says Double points for anyone who can identify the original. As I said, when these guys reinvent a song....

  2. ivylander says And now, just for Deadman, Levon Helm's first guest vocal appearance on record following his throat cancer...

  4. I am says Bill, You were gone? I hadn't noticed. Nice picks BTW. As for the original ...... Wasn't the incomparable Ms. Lindsay Lohan? Sorry to sully you post in such a way ..... I was compelled by lack of caffeine.

  6. ivylander says Chris, should I feel fortunate that my office computer blocks videos? I wasn't totally AWOL, but could only make flying visits for a couple of weeks. December is always the most frantic time of the year around here. It's like everybody wakes up at Thanksgiving and realizes they have all these projects that have to be out the door by the end of the year. It's like a flippin' emergency room around here....

  7. I am says Oh yeah, very fortunate indeed. Now that I had some java, I regret my actions. Have pity on me ..... I was weak.

  8. fistula spume says Wow. That's the most spiritual version of "I Want You To Want Me" I've ever hoid. Good stuff. Is it just me or is the notification system down. I got lucky finding your post. I'm mogging blind! Thanks for the tracks and the heads up on the artist Ivy.

  11. ivylander says No, they're the originators.

  12. kristiana says These guys are sounding smoooth! That Cody, what a gem. How the heck are ya, Bill?

  13. ivylander says I owe you a note and an apology, K. I totally dropped the ball on our correspondence. Things are terrific at home, less so when I'm at my work desk - where I am spending an obscene amount of unfulfilling time lately. They tell me it will get better soon....

  14. 2Serenity says Sounds like I am in church on a Sunday morning about to get the spirit! Thanks for sharing. These men have serious gospel roots. I am not familiar with them but I can tell from the sound, the feel and the vibe they had a true gospel connection. Looks like I will be on an adventure learning more about them. Thanks for the enlightenment, ivylander! Get your work done! I can relate! =)

  15. dermahrk says Nice cover, and I've never heard of the Holmes brothers before either. But one of the things I always liked about the original as done by EC and Lowe was the tongue-in-cheek treatment. The Brothers' earnest treatment of the song loses that element.

  16. ivylander says I've gotta mull your take on the EC version. It's definitively different from the brothers', but in a different direction, seems to me. I always thought of Elvis's as a howl of pain, a sort of "is this world as fucked up as it looks?"
