WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

The Soul of Black Peru

Posted about 2 years ago
David Byrne is one of those people whose music (post-Talking Heads, at least) I wish I liked better. He's smart, articulate, skeptical in all the right ways and deeply humane. I respect him immensely. His albums are just hard for me to listen to.That said, Byrne is one of the truly great curators of popular music. His taste really is beyond reproach. There was a run in the mid-Nineties, just after the Brazilian compilations that made his second reputation, where I would buy any new Luaka Bop collection on blind faith and in full confidence. And would not be disappointed."The Soul of Black Peru" is probably my favorite of these. The rhythms, clearly grounded in Africa, are complex but always effortless, never needlessly tricky. The interplay between the musicians is consistently sympathetic, the songs well-crafted, the singing terrific - does that just about cover everything? This came out in '95 (can it really have been 12 years ago? Scary...)and made a name for Susana Baca - she still shows up on the concert circuit. You can probably figure out why when you hear this. It's really a shame that Byrne isn't doing this sort of thing any more.(Another, non-Baca cut from "The Soul of Black Peru" in the comments.)

  1. Cody B says Buttery. The subdued backing still moves in mysterious ways.

  2. Dzendvokh says Excellent selection this morning Ivy. I was thinking about posting some Baca myself, you beat me to it. Luaka Bop discs still regularly find their way into the listening department. I remember hearing this song and being compelled to track Baca down. Thanks

  3. Dzendvokh says Here's one off her debut album for Luaka Bop, I think probably my favorite album of hers.

  4. Spike says ivylander, it's not easy to describe music, but your words about Susana Baca accurately fit the two tracks you and Dzendvokh presented. I gotta get her disks!. I also agree totally with you about David Byrne. (I don't see the non-Baca cut you mentioned.)

  5. El Monko and Son says I'll have to listen to this when I go home. I,too, wished I liked Mr. Byrne's solo work more (and late era T-Heads). That being said, when I saw him at the Fillmore for the "Into the Eyeball" (or whatever) tour a few years ago, he only played three T-heads songs, but I really loved the whole show. It was killer. By the way, I don't even check my email. I cannot deal with it. On the other hand, that is probably why I am more of a cult phenomenon than you supremely popular types.

  7. Mike the Knife says Baca? Lovely. But I must disagree about Byrne's post-Heads stuff, specifically his Rei Momo solo album, which I think is simply wonderful from beginning to end. If you like Talking Heads and appreciate their later recordings and haven't heard Rei Momo, I recommend it.

  11. ivylander says Weird. The second track was there when I first posted. Sorry not to have gotten to this sooner, but I was on a little road trip down to Our Nation's Capital to see a Allen Toussaint solo performance at the Library of Congress. (Hope to have the post on this ready soon.) Anyway, here's the second song, take two...

  13. ivylander says Dzendvokh, I muchy dig that other Susana track. Many, many thanks. Mike, I'll go a lot of the way with you on Rei Momo. To my suspect ears, "Carnival Girl" and "Dirty Old Town" are gems, there's much else that's pretty good, and there's some so-so stuff as well. After that album, not much.

  14. Girlcrawl says Superb; Susana Baca's voice stirs me anew each time I hear it - the Maria Lando track is pure musical magic. Merci!

  15. kat3260 says Byrne's apparent interest in all varieties of music is what really made the Talking Heads work for me... It doesn't matter if I can't understand what she's saying, that's some good stuff. Love the bongos. Definitely need more of this
