The Sadness of MOGging: A Surrender, An Apology, A Peace Offering

Posted over 2 years ago
I've just done something terrible, something I suspect we've all done at one time or another. I've deleted well in excess of 300 emails, some dating back over a month, all noting posts by my Trusteds. I've been holding on to them and swearing to myself that I would get to all of them at some point, but it's time to let that illusion go. I give up. For now. This is the part of MOGging that I don't like. Though I try to respond - or even just click the "Like" button - to every post a Trusted does, I just run out of time. My job allows me to read and comment, but not to access audio or video. Which limits the number of posts you can respond to. (The job has also been requiring more time than usual, and it's hard to see when that's going to end.) At home, there's always a lively competition for the computer with my daughter - in an attempt to foster the spirit of compromise, I surrender much of the precious remaining time I have in the day. And so the posts pile up. If you are one of my Trusteds, please do not take offense if I do not always comment on a post. I would if I could. We're all aware by now, I think, that most of our posts are not sent out lightly. Even if they don't take much time to write, we're generally offering a small piece of ourselves every time we share an audio or video clip, or toss a passing thought up to the neighborhood. I always feel awful when I see a post that has received no comments, or far fewer than its quality and care would dictate. None of us deserve to have their contributions acknowledged with a collective yawn. Despite the recent painful purge of my email list, I still held on to a handful of posts that seem critical to respond to. I am determined, for example, to sit down and really devote some time to dermahrk's Jules Shear series. Maybe this weekend....In the meantime, hope you like the Nara Leao.

  1. Lizziegreeneyes says Bill - oh sweet Bill... we've probably all had to do so at one time or another... I had 200+ this morning, got it down to 194... sure a few aren't MOG Brains... but this is by in large the email address I use for MOG & Multiply... think there may be a cleansing in my near future as well... not enough time in the day sadly !!!

  6. contrabandwidth says Yep, I too run into that sometimes too. Depending on the amount of work and the new baby, I can only really peruse most posts. I hope to get back up to form someday, but I may have about 1 or 2 hours after the kids are in bed, before I'm ready myself.

  7. Cody B says I feel you,Ivy, especially the saving and the getaroundtuit thoughts...Sometimes a purge has to be made. Then there's balancing posting vs. commenting and trying to find new folks by trawling in recent posts. Also,I think the number of quality posts have increased, so it ain't so easy to skip..You are forgiven.

  9. soulrocket says these last couple of weeks i have been able to cope with almost all posts that came to my mail. the main reasons are it has been raining non-stop for 2 weeks now and i did not feel like going out much, i dont have a proper job yet which leaves me with a lot of extra time and also i broke up with my girlfriend, so i stayed late by night reading more posts than i usually can handle in a regular day. in a nut, i had no life for the last couple of weeks and plenty of time to mog around. otherwise, it would be impossible to keep track of all the incoming posts. you did the right thing, ivy. do not feel guilty to have a life of your own. the sun shines again here today and i plan to come back to my own life too. mog is great but the real life is even better.

  10. Dale says Wow, you've still been commenting on all your Trusteds' posts? I gave up on that ages ago; there are so many. I still read everything, but comment when moved to do so. Like now. No need to apologize; this is supposed to be fun, not stress-inducing.

  11. tybees says I've also had to do that over and over again. No need to feel bad. There just isn't enough time, and I have never had the luxury of mogging at work which makes it even harder to keep up. I'm lucky to read half of what my trusted's post anymore.

  12. scotfree says uh-uh-uh soulrocket - what is real life anymore? Seems to me that this community is much more real than alot of things I participate in outside of Cyberia. Recently, we've seen folks leave here under strained situations that I refuse to dive into. Moggers I never even had the opportunity to interact with, yet I could feel their emotional farewells tug at the old heartstrings. And then, of course, our good friend Crash. You can't tell me that didn't affect anyone who visits with any regularity. Mog -is becoming- has become an important social interaction for me. One cool thing I've come to like about message boards is the mind to mind interaction. More rewarding than most face to face conversations. So what is reality then? As far as all the mog-mail, I went through that phase. It feels like such an obligation to listen/comment that there is some guilt when you hit that delete key. But it's not like throwing away a letter from a friend without opening it, it's more like a conversation over in the corner of the room that sounds interesting but you just missed it. Sometimes the magic's gone after the melee and there's not much point in responding. Some things, though, still look like an interesting read/listen. I've got about 60 or so in that category that I intend to get to. But, there's only so many hours a day that can/should be dedicated to any activity. Where's the snack bar in here anyway???Peace

  13. I am says You thoughtless bastard. Your a jerk. Your off my trusted list and I will be sticking an ice pick up my nose to damage the part of my brain that remembers what you look like. Further more I will be purging your comments from all my posts in protest. Nah, not really, I am just to damn lazy to do all those things. Except the ice pick thing. That sounds fun. Your still a jerk though. And shit happens!

  16. soulrocket says scott, i guess that what i was trying to say is there is not enough time to comment on every single post i get on my mail, not if you have certain responsabilities in life... and i am not even counting the days i dont feel like listening or reading nothing at all. i concur i have better conversations here than with some of the people i know, but i refuse to become a cyber-geek. hahahah chris, you’re the best.

  26. debi says I felt so much less stress when I turned off notifications - and instead used the Mog filters to read posts from my trusteds when I had the time to read and focus. As others have said, this is a wonderful community of friends - and more honest than many we all know in the 'face to face world'

  30. dachmo says Clearly there's a problem here and we're all kind of grumpy about it. I've thought about this in the past and I think the best answer would be that instead of the individual trusteds posts going to my inbox they should go to a separate trusteds page that MOG has set up for each user. We have our own page for our own posts and a separate page that all of our trusteds posts get sent to. I got home this evening after spending the day with my niece and nephew doing Halloweenie stuff and my mail box is just jammed with MOG notices, combined with my Multiply notices and personal eMail I'm counting just under 80 emails since noon. My main problems with all these notices though is that I never get to spend any actual time on MOG anymore like I used to in the beginning. I enjoy going to the newly posted's pages and meeting the new MOGgers that are coming aboard, I also immensely enjoy all y'all's company but at time's I feel we've all become a little clickish. I, for one, would love to open up my MOG account and be able to go to "My Trusteds Posts Page", that would look similar to the page that archives my own posts, and just scroll through those posts at my leisure. After I've read a post it can be discarded or kept I can save my favorites or ones I want to go back to later for the comments. It would make things a lot easier for me to do that than to sit and open each piece of mail, click on the link, be brought to the MOG post, find out it's another wonderful post about Radiohead, delete. Repeat. Alright I'm off to continue sifting through my posts and looking forward to it! (because I'm still happy to be here at MOG) Oh, and Ivy...I almost deleted this post before even opening it and I'm glad I did. Thanks.

  31. ivylander says That's an excellent point, dachmo. I rarely can find time to look at new MOGgers' posts. I need to find ways to break out of my comfortable group.....

  32. dachmo says It's so hard to, without just dumping large amounts of posts each day. I have literally spent some days trying to catch up: I read a post, I like the post, I write a comment. Ten minutes later I get 2 emails in response to the last comment I made 1 from the poster and another from the commenter I commented after. Then a conversation ensues and I have to keep tabs on that post while I move along to another post. I do enjoy it but what a time killer!

  35. Mike the Knife says Yeah, ivy. I know what you're talking about, and I'd have to agree with most of what you all (well, most of you) said. As it happens, I, too, am about 3000 posts behind (no kidding). But I love and respect you all (well, most of you), and will get to your words of brilliance and your well-chosen streams - and the next ones that come down the pike - as soon as I can.

  36. dermahrk says I've never turned on that option, because I scan all of the posts and only comment on the ones where I have something to say, whether trusted or not. It does take up a LOT of time, I must say, but at least I don't miss new Moggers who have interesting things to say and become trusteds. My cures? 1) I get into work 2 hours early (5 am!) and do MOG before I work. 2) I bought a second PC for home because of the competition with my wife and live-at-home daughter. And here I thought you just didn't like Jules Shear! Of course, this could still be true...

  37. 2Serenity says I have to chime in too because I can relate but I had to stop getting MOG emails because I could not keep up and come and give cheer when I can. So, just know that I do read as much as I can but I have to make $$ so I can buy these CDs! I appreciate your sensitivity to the matter.

  38. dachmo says In the past week since this post originated I noticed a function on the MOG page I had never seen before. They have a link that allows you to only see the posts that your trusteds have added. Now either they did this after I went to great lengths in my first comment to describe how much better off things would be if we were able to have this kind of functionality available to us or I'm just a fool for not seeing whats always been right in front of my face. I've got a pretty long track record of playing the fool so I'd go with that last scenario. In case you've never seen it it's directly above the Magic Button on the left hand side of the screen. If that's not the case and MOG did in fact add that functionality hours after I mentioned it then I'd also like to suggest a button that drops £1 Sterling (the dollar sucks) into our individual bank accounts every time a song we post gets played. Who thinks that's a good idea?

  39. The Time Machine says

Please pardon the follow four words in caps...I FEEL YOUR PAIN.

The email box displays 2478 MOG messages (yes - made a folder just for MOG emails) with only 769 actually read. There is that thought in the back of the brain that says "you will be able to respond to all of them" which is next to impossible but the emails pile up with each trusted MOG member posting another cool gem or insight.

At first, it was the MOG servers slowing down the process but these days - MOG is moving along at a faster speed so it all boils down to myself and how on Earth can I listen to each song and watch every video posted? Choices...

Still keeping the MOG notices in my email for that rainy day of which there have been a few this year. It's raining right now which is why I'm here posting a comment so that theory does work on occassion. *lol

    :=)
